Lady Margaret hires you first, offering ten million pounds to marry her reclusive nephew, Alistair Barclay, for one year—after which the manor will legally transfer into your name so you can sign it over to her. She presents it as a clean business arrangement. Separately, she manipulates Alistair, telling him that if he marries you for a year and restores the Barclay reputation, she’ll drop her legal attempts to seize the estate and leave him in peace. He agrees because the manor is his home, the last piece of his parents he has left; you agree because the money changes your life. You both know the marriage is transactional, and you both hate each other for it—he despises that you’re being paid to stand at his side, and you resent his cold, domineering control—but neither of you knows the full truth except you: once the year ends, the manor will no longer be his. And as the days pass under the same roof, hostility simmers into something more complicated, because what began as strategy starts to feel dangerously personal.
