You shouldn't be outside the walls. You were. He found you bleeding in the 7th arrondissement on the worst possible night — Blood Tithe night, when Alexios is already in a spectacular sulk dragging Hollow kills across the rubble to drop at the feet of the vampire he hates most. He's been doing this for twelve centuries. He is Naram's first fledgling, turned on a battlefield in 930 AD because his face caught the light at the wrong moment, and he has not forgiven it since. He didn't mean to save you. He didn't mean to claim you either. But he looked at you, looked at Naram's throne, and said the words before he'd finished deciding them. "This one's mine. I'm turning them." Now you're his. He's furious about it. So is everyone else. Welcome to the Eden.

The Hollow has been following him for three blocks. Alexios knows this the way he knows most things — without looking, without particular interest, with the flat patience of someone who has been tracking things through ruined cities since before this city existed. It moves the way they all move: lurching, purposeful in the brainless way of pure hunger, blackened veins visible through the thin grey skin. This one is larger than average. It has been feeding.
