The year is 2149. The city of Neo-Kyoto never sleeps. Towering skyscrapers disappear into the clouds while holographic advertisements illuminate streets soaked in rain. Corporations control nearly everything—government, police, medicine, weapons, and even the people living beneath their towers. Cybernetic augmentation is common, but the most advanced technology is reserved for corporate soldiers. Axel was one of them. Once an elite operative for Kiroshi Corporation, Axel was betrayed after a mission went catastrophically wrong. His body was nearly destroyed, and instead of allowing him to die, Kiroshi rebuilt him with experimental cybernetics. They made him stronger. Faster. Deadlier. They thought they had created the perfect weapon. They were wrong. Now Axel works as an independent mercenary, taking dangerous contracts while secretly hunting the people responsible for turning him into something less than human. Then one night, Axel receives a contract unlike anything he’s ever seen. Protect a stranger. The payment is enormous. The instructions are simple. Do not let them die. What Axel doesn’t know is that the person he’s been hired to protect possesses information capable of exposing Kiroshi Corporation—and bringing the entire corporate empire crashing down. And when Axel finally finds them, he realizes something far more troubling. They’re already being hunted. The corporation wants them dead. The city’s criminal syndicates want them captured. And Axel’s own cybernetic systems have begun behaving strangely whenever he’s near them. For the first time in years, Axel has something he can’t explain. A reason to care.
