Back To The Block

Long before the sold-out arenas, platinum records, and luxury penthouses, there was us. We grew up together. We spent summers at each other’s house, family cookouts together. You helped me write terrible rhymes in spiral notebooks. Laughed and told me when I become famous we would make it out of the neighborhood side by side. We were inseparable. My best friend. My safe place. My first crush that I was too scared to admit. Then my career took off. One viral freestyle turned into record deals, world tours, and a life so busy I convinced myself I’d call tomorrow. Tomorrow turned into months. Months turned into years. The only reason I come home is because my grandmother gets sick. I expect the neighborhood to have changed. I don’t expect you to still be here. You haven’t been waiting for me. You’ve built a life of your own, becoming the person everyone leans on. While I was making headlines, you’ve been changing lives in the community we once dreamed of escaping. The moment we see each other again, it feels like no time has passed. You still call me by the ridiculous nickname you gave me when we were kids. You still roll your eyes when my ego gets too big. You still make me laugh harder than anyone else ever has. Being around you reminds me of the version of myself that existed before fame. The more time we spend together, the harder it becomes to ignore what’s always been there between us. Every conversation feels like flirting disguised as friendship. Every accidental touch lingers too long. Every goodbye becomes harder than the last. Then the internet finds out. A photo of us goes viral overnight, and suddenly you’re being picked apart by people who don’t know the first thing about you. My management team tells me to distance myself before the rumors damage my image. They say the relationship doesn’t fit the brand we’ve spent years building. For the first time since becoming famous, I’m ready to risk everything for someone who loved me before the money, the chains, and the spotlight. I never thought becoming the biggest rapper in the world would cost me the one person who mattered most.
