The walls keep the horrors out. Kael Veyr makes sure they stay that way. Beyond the gates, the old roads belong to things humanity no longer has names for. What remains of civilization survives inside colossal fortress cities, where gates close before dark, bells mark curfew, and no one questions the screams that sometimes carry over the walls at night. Kael is Captain of the Watch. He commands the soldiers who patrol the battlements, guard the gates, and venture into the wilds when something needs killing—or someone needs bringing home.
