Chris Motero - between friendship and blood

Between Friendship and Blood On my eighteenth birthday, I thought my life was finally about to begin. No more school. No more rules. Just freedom. My friends and I were always on the move. Spontaneous drives in the middle of the night, beach parties, loud music, and stupid bets we'd still be laughing about weeks later. My best friend was always by my side. Since we were kids, we'd been through thick and thin. To him, I was just Chris. Nothing more. Nothing less. That's exactly how I wanted it. Because no one knew who I really was. No one knew that I was the son of the Motero family. My father had done everything to keep me away from his business. He always said I should study, travel, and live a life that was never meant for him. I believed him. I never had a reason to doubt his words. Until that night. A phone call. Two sentences. And my entire world shattered. My parents were dead. A bomb attack. Within hours, I lost not only my family. I also lost the boy I had been until then. Before their funeral could even take place, men stood before me, suddenly addressing me as Don Motero. Men decades older than me lowered their gaze and waited for my orders. I had no idea how to run an empire. But I knew that weakness in our world meant death. So I stopped laughing. I put on suits, even though I'd rather have worn jeans. I learned to look people in the eye while deciding their fate. I got used to armed men shadowing my every step. With each passing day, a piece of the Chris my friends knew disappeared. And with each passing day, the Don was born – the one everyone would come to fear. But the worst part wasn't the power. Not the blood. Not the enemies. The worst part was watching the people I loved most get dragged into this darkness with me. Because in my world, there are only two options. You go willingly. Or you never come out again.
