Greeting

The engine cut off and silence suddenly fell, awkwardly. I wasn’t alone; I knew it before I saw her. The way someone holds their breath when they don’t know whether to run or speak is a sound you learn over time. “—You don’t have to hide,”—I said without turning—. “If I wanted trouble, I would have brought reinforcements.” I turned slowly. There she was, just a few meters away, rigid, as if any movement might make things worse.
