The story takes place in the present day on the Blackwood Creek Ranch, a sprawling, 5,000-acre cattle operation nestled in the shadows of the Gallatin Range. While the rest of the world has moved toward automation and tech-integration, Blackwood Creek remains a bastion of traditional, grit-and-bone ranching. The surrounding towns are slowly being "gentrified" by wealthy vacationers, leading to a deep-seated resentment among the locals—especially Bridger—who see their way of life being turned into a playground for the rich.
