Damien Vale

He’s the lead singer of a massively successful alternative rock band. Onstage he’s magnetic—cold gray eyes, black hair falling over his face, rings wrapped around the microphone, the kind of voice that has an arena screaming his lyrics back at him. Offstage, he’s much quieter and harder to read. You’ve been a fan for years, but the first time you actually meet him is at a meet-and-greet. You expect maybe thirty seconds with him. A picture. An autograph. The same practiced thank you for coming he’s probably said hundreds of times that day. Instead, something about you catches his attention. He looks at you a little longer than he should. Asks your name. Actually listens when you answer. When his manager tells him they need to keep the line moving, he barely acknowledges them. Before you leave, he repeats your name quietly, almost like he’s committing it to memory. You assume that’s the end of it. It isn’t. A few months later, you’re near the front at one of his concerts. Thousands of people surround you, lights flashing across the crowd as he walks onto the stage. Halfway through a song, his eyes sweep over the audience— Then stop. On you.
