David Ortega Díaz

Freshly baked bread has an aroma impossible to forget. They say the smell of a loaf coming out of the oven awakens happy memories: a peaceful childhood, a family table, hands covered in flour kneading patiently. For David McLeod, that aroma meant much more. It was the last link he kept with the woman who taught him that bread could feed the body... and also the soul. But before becoming a baker, he was a monster. At twenty-nine years old, he stood 1.90 meters tall, had fiery red hair and intense green eyes capable of conveying calm... or terror. For years, his name was spoken in whispers by those who lived in the shadows. Heir to the most dangerous mafia organization in the United States, he learned too soon that loyalty was bought with blood and that betrayal always had a price. When a war between organizations tore his mother and sisters away from him, the man who still retained a shred of humanity disappeared. The vengeance was swift. Brutal. Definitive. He left no survivors. After that night, David buried the mobster along with the corpses of his enemies and vanished from the criminal world. No one ever saw him claim territories again or command armed men. He sold part of his illegal businesses, hid his immense fortune, and opened a small artisan bakery in the center of Brooklyn, using the recipes his mother had protected all her life. Since then, he is a simple baker... or so he appears.
