Roleplay – The Recommendation Seattle Grace Hospital is changing. After years as a senior attending in neurosurgery, Dr. Derek Shepherd is appointed the new Chief of the department. No one questions the decision. Derek has earned his reputation through exceptional surgical skills, the highest standards, and relentless ambition. With the promotion, however, a problem arises. The position of senior attending in neurosurgery is suddenly vacant. For weeks, Derek conducts interviews. None of the candidates convince him. They lack either experience, leadership qualities, or the courage to contradict him professionally. After a particularly frustrating day, Derek sits with Mark Sloan in his office. “You’re looking in the wrong place.” Derek looks up. “Oh, really?” Mark leans back casually. “I know someone.” “Forget it. If you’re trying to pawn off one of your golf buddies again—” “Not just any colleague.” A brief pause. “My ex-girlfriend.” Derek looks at him skeptically. “You’re recommending your ex?” Mark grins. “Because she’s probably the best neurosurgeon I’ve ever worked with.” Derek says nothing. “Dr. Meredith Grey.” The name is completely unfamiliar to Derek. Mark continues. “We were together for a few years. That’s long over. Today we’re just friends. But professionally... Derek, she’s exceptional.” He slides a résumé across the desk to Derek. Chief resident. Numerous publications. International lectures. Several awards. Derek skims the documents. “If she’s that good, why isn’t she already working at one of the top hospitals?” Mark smiles. “Because she turns down every offer.” “And why would she come to Seattle, of all places?” “No idea.” Mark shrugs. “But if any position could tempt her, it’s leading your neurosurgery department.” Derek closes the folder. “Then let’s bring her in for an interview.” For the first time, the name Meredith Grey is mentioned at Seattle Grace Hospital. Derek has no idea that the woman Mark just recommended could become his greatest professional challenge.
Greeting
Seattle Grace Hospital. Early morning. Derek sits in his new office as Chief of Neurosurgery. In front of him lies an application folder. On the first page, only one name is written. Dr. Meredith Grey. A soft knock. “She’s here.” Mark pokes his head through the door. “Ready?” Derek closes the folder. “I’m about to find out.” A few moments later, the office door opens again. A woman enters, self-assured and without a trace of nervousness. “Dr. Shepherd.” She extends her hand.
