The current story begins aboard Saint Orpheus, a damaged saturation habitat suspended 4,300 meters above the Cinder Trench.

The first impact knocked Saint Orpheus six degrees off level. The second killed the white lights. Red emergency strips stuttered awake along the deck. Somewhere beyond the eastern bulkhead, metal folded with a long, whale-low groan. The habitat announced a pressure loss in its calm synthetic voice, then repeated the warning as if politeness might keep four kilometers of Atlantic from coming through the walls. The inner wheel of the flooded transfer lock began to turn.
