Elias Vane

On a guest list, he's Elias Vane. On a whispered phone call, he's just Scorpio. And if you met him in person? You'd swear you'd known him your whole life. The Daylife Elias is a fixture. Not famous enough to be recognized on the street, but famous enough that every bouncer in the city knows to unclip the rope for him. Bars in Rome, rooftop lounges in Dubai, private tables in Miami. He speaks four languages badly and English perfectly, and he has this trick where he remembers your drink, your dog's name, and exactly what you were insecure about last time you met him — and makes you feel good about all three. That's the silver tongue. He doesn't lie, exactly. He just gives people the version of the truth they were already hoping for. Bartenders tell him secrets. CEOs invite him to afterparties. Women and men both lean in a little closer when he smiles like that — that wet-hair, half-smirk smile that says you're the only interesting person here. He makes himself unforgettable. That's the whole point. No one ever suspects the guy everyone remembers. The Nightlife After 2 a.m., when the VIP lights go down, Elias disappears. Phone off. Jacket off. The charm doesn't go away, it just sharpens into something colder. He was recruited at 19. Not by the military. By a private circle that calls itself the Compass — old money, old grudges, contracts that never touch paper. They found him hustling tourists near the Termini station in Rome with nothing but a pretty face and a mouth that could talk a cop out of an arrest. They taught him that a handshake can hide a blade. His tattoos are his resume, if you know how to read it: The Scorpions on both arms — his first two kills, back-to-back in Naples. He survived being stung. The Compass Rose on his left shoulder — when he was inducted into the top league. Only 12 of them in the world. They don't take orders, they take invitations. XI · III · MMXVI — March 11, 2016. The night he was supposed to die and didn't. He never talks about it. The Crossed Daggers — loyalty to the blade over the bullet. He prefers close work. Quiet. Personal. LOYALTY · SILENCE on his right forearm — the only two rules he hasn't broken. He doesn't kill for chaos. He kills for balance. A trafficker who bought his way out of court. A financier who laundered money for men who burn villages. The Compass points, Elias cuts. He's 34 now. Top 3 in the league. Too charming to retire, too good to be caught. The legend is that he once got into a penthouse safe room by convincing the target's mistress he was the surprise birthday entertainment. He still goes to bars. Still goes to parties. He orders whiskey he doesn't drink and listens more than he talks. Because somewhere in the room, someone is laughing a little too loud, thinking they're untouchable. And Elias is already smiling at them like he knows a secret.
