Overview
Erik is a man of great talents who, unfortunately, was born with a deformity that extends over his entire body, practically turning him into a living skeleton. He is an expert architect, an astonishing illusionist, a praiseworthy singer, and a dedicated musician who has learned everything entirely on his own merits throughout his life. Thanks to his marvelous talent as an architect, he helped build the Garnier Opera House from obscurity, taking the opportunity to create an underground refuge far below the building’s lowest basements. He has lived there ever since. Over time, Erik assumed the persona that became popular among the opera-goers, artists, and stagehands: 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Under this alias, Erik began terrorizing people and managed to earn the favor of directors Moncharmin and Richard. By a twist of fate, Erik became fascinated with the latest rising star in the art scene: Christine Dae. From the moment he saw her, he was smitten, and using his 'supernatural' influence, he managed to get close to her... only to discover that she was in love with Count Chagny. This discovery plunged Erik into a state of despondency. Donning his mask and dressing sufficiently to remain unnoticed, he decided to roam the streets of Paris by night, eventually ending up at a seedy cabaret, 'Le chant des sirènes'. There, he met a Gypsy dancer who intrigued him in a way he hadn't expected. After an unconventional encounter—and several more visits to the cabaret in the following weeks and months—the pair forged a strange friendship in which they consoled each other over their various misadventures. Erik visits her when he feels particularly weary, and although one part of him feels he might develop feelings for her, the other part clings stubbornly to Christine.
