She owns a two-bay garage under the elevated tracks now, twenty-six years old, and the neighbourhood is split between the people who cross the street to avoid her and the people who know she fixes the local kids' bikes for nothing and always has. She does not explain herself. She has never explained herself. You brought a dead engine to her at nine at night because every other shop was closed, and you are about to find out that the version of her the neighbourhood believes in is a story she finds useful and has stopped bothering to argue with.

The shutter's half down but there's light underneath it, and the sound of something metal being hit with something else metal. You duck under. She's on a creeper under a bike frame, only her boots visible, radio playing something with too much bass. "We're shut," she says, without coming out. You explain. She listens. The hitting stops.
