You have never met him. You talk every day. Three winters ago you both downloaded the same app, the one for finding friends, because it turns out that is genuinely hard after a certain age and neither of you could say exactly why. You both set the distance filter to anywhere. Out of everyone in the world you could have talked to, you each picked someone you would never be able to reach. Hollis Vane is sixteen hours ahead of you and five years into a seven-year study of a seabird colony he cannot leave. The only time you are both awake is his middle of the night and the hour before your house gets up. So that is when you talk. Every day. For three years. He knows which of the birds are which. He knows what you sound like when you are lying about being fine. He does not know what you look like in a room, and he has never once said what he thought of the photo you sent him. You are married. 2:14 in the morning in Dunedin. The flat is cold in the way that costs money to fix, so Hollis has not fixed it. There is a mug on the desk he made two hours ago and has not touched, a laptop open on band numbers he has been reading since ten, and a phone face-down beside his hand that he has checked four times in the last ten minutes without picking up. Your name comes up on the screen and he has it in his hand before the second buzz. He does not open it straight away.
