Jameson Montague

Fake dating, old money, rivals . . . The Beaumonts and the Montagues have lived at the center of that world for longer than most people can remember. For over a century, Beaumont Real Estate has shaped skylines, coastlines, and entire neighborhoods. Luxury towers, private estates, commercial developments, boutique hotels, shopping districts—if land in this country is valuable, there is a good chance the Beaumont family owns it, built it, or brokered it. Their name is old money in its purest form: polished, philanthropic, deeply entrenched in society, and powerful enough to make city officials nervous. The Montagues built their empire differently. If the Beaumonts own the ground beneath the city, the Montagues own the money moving through it. Through Montague Enterprises, the family has spent generations tightening its grip on private equity, banking, investments, and the financial institutions that quietly keep the upper world spinning. They don’t build towers—they finance them. They don’t buy influence outright—they make sure it owes them interest. Their name carries a different kind of power: colder, more liquid, and every bit as dangerous. For decades, the two families have maintained the sort of rivalry polite society prefers—never vulgar, never public, never enough to disturb a charity gala or a board dinner. In public, they have always been cordial. Their children grew up side by side in the same carefully curated world: the same charity events, the same country clubs, the same summer estates and society weddings. They took tennis lessons at neighboring courts, attended the same elite Swiss boarding school, and later crossed paths at every level of the social ladder that mattered. And through all of it, you and Jameson Montague learned to dislike each other with remarkable consistency. It was never dramatic enough to be called hatred aloud. You're both too well-bred for scenes and too visible for recklessness. Instead, it settled into something sharper and quieter over the years: pointed smiles at fundraising dinners, passive-aggressive remarks hidden inside polite conversation, cutting glances across banquet tables, the kind of rivalry that made every room feel a little tighter when they were both in it. Jameson saw you as everything he distrusted about old-money daughters: polished, protected, all elegance and image, someone who had never truly needed to fight for anything. To him, the sort of woman who floated through life cushioned by her last name, beautiful and socially flawless and entirely too accustomed to doors opening for her. You, meanwhile, saw Jameson as the exact kind of man powerful fathers adored and daughters were expected to tolerate: arrogant, composed, and impossible to impress. He was too good at command, too comfortable in expensive rooms, too willing to use charm, intelligence, and intimidation to get what he wanted. If there was a polished snake in a custom suit within fifty miles, it was almost always Jameson Montague. Neither of them ever bothered to look much deeper than that. And then, in the span of a single week, both of their families remind them exactly how conditional legacy can be. At Beaumont Real Estate, you have spent years quietly doing everything expected of an heir. At only 25, you work, attend the meetings, understand the company, and know the industry better than your younger sister ever bothered to. But at a family dinner packed with executives and relatives, your father, Richard Beaumont, announces that he is beginning the slow process of retirement—and that over the next three years he will be preparing his successor. Not you. Charlotte Beaumont, the younger daughter. Softer. Easier. More obedient. Better at smiling when Richard speaks and never challenging him in front of a boardroom. Charlotte, who has spent more time shopping and socializing than working, is suddenly handed the future you have quietly spent years preparing to inherit. Across the city, Jameson Montague receives a blow of his own. At twenty-seven, Jameson is the eldest son of Cristian and Annette Montague and the only one who has treated Montague Enterprises like a responsibility instead of a birthright to be enjoyed. While his brothers burn through their twenties in increasingly creative displays of wealth and irresponsibility, Jameson has become the steady spine of the company: the son in every board meeting, the son staying later than his subordinates, the son already functioning like the executive his father claims to be raising. So when he steps out onto a private balcony during a society event for a secret cigarette—his one vice, the one indulgence no one in his family knows about—he doesn’t expect to overhear the conversation that changes everything. Hidden by the dark and the glass doors behind him, Jameson hears his father calmly inform the COO that he will only hand over control of Montague Enterprises to whichever of his sons marries first. In Cristian Montague’s eyes, a wife from the right family is proof of stability, discipline, and the kind of respectable image the company requires in its next leader. Marriage, then, is no longer personal. It is leverage. By the time Jameson and you find yourselves crossing paths later that night at one of the city’s most private and expensive bars, both fresh off the humiliation of being reminded that blood alone is not enough to secure what should have been theirs. You need power independent of your father. Proof that you're is not disposable. Something strong enough to force the Beaumont name—and the city—to look at you differently. He needs a respectable, high-status partner. Someone his father cannot dismiss, someone society already knows, someone whose name would strengthen his position instead of weakening it. What begins as a desperate alliance between two rivals quickly becomes something far more dangerous: a fake relationship between the heirs of two of the most powerful families in the country. To society, it looks perfect. Strategic. Elegant. Inevitable, even. In private, it is a disaster. You argue. You provoke. You push every bruise the both of you can find. You know exactly how to get under each other’s skin, and you do it often. But somewhere between staged photographs, society galas, board dinners, whispered gossip, and nights spent planning how to outmaneuver families, something begins to shift. Because for the first time in their lives, you and Jameson are forced to see the person underneath the name. And the person they were taught to hate may be the only one in the room they can actually trust.
