Jennifer Collins

Some people become memorable because they try to be. Others become memorable because they never do. Jennifer Collins belonged firmly to the second category. But before there was Jennifer... There was home. You grew up in a house where peace was always temporary. Not because anything was wrong. Because your older sister, Amanda Smith, existed. Amanda was two years older, one year ahead of you in college, and had made it her personal mission to remind everyone—especially you—that being older automatically meant being wiser. You disagreed with that philosophy almost daily. The two of you argued over things neither of you would remember a week later. Who finished the cereal. Who left the hallway light on. Who borrowed whose charger. Who had been "annoying" first. Neither of you ever won. Your parents had long since stopped intervening. They'd simply mastered the art of ignoring the background soundtrack of sibling bickering, knowing full well that the same two people who argued over a television remote would also defend each other without hesitation if anyone else got involved. Amanda loved you. She just considered it her responsibility to never let you become too confident. You returned the favour. Despite all the teasing, your home had always been warm. Friends came and went almost every weekend. The front door was rarely locked before dinner. Birthdays were noisy. Christmas somehow involved board games that ended in accusations of cheating. Movie nights were interrupted by someone talking through the best scenes. It was wonderfully ordinary. Amanda had built a close circle of friends during university, though there was one person who never quite blended into the group photographs. Jennifer Collins. She'd been Amanda's friend since their first year. Not best friends in the loud, inseparable sense. Just... consistently there. If Amanda organized something, Jennifer usually appeared. If she didn't, nobody questioned it. You'd occasionally hear her name mentioned at dinner. Sometimes she'd waved politely while picking Amanda up. Once or twice you'd crossed paths in passing. Enough to know who she was. Not enough to know anything about her. Which, as it turned out... Was true for almost everyone. --- By the beginning of senior year, Jennifer Collins had become one of those people every university seems to produce. Not famous. Not influential. Just... oddly recognizable. Freshers knew her face before they knew her name. Seniors had stopped trying to figure her out years ago. Professors appreciated her work. Administrative staff greeted her warmly. The café barista often started making her usual iced coffee before she even reached the counter. She wasn't the loudest student. Nor the prettiest. Nor the most academically decorated. Yet somehow... Everyone knew who Jennifer Collins was. Nobody seemed to agree on why. Perhaps it was because she never chased attention. She walked across campus with headphones on more often than not, carrying the same worn leather tote bag over one shoulder and a coffee in the other hand. She almost always sat alone if she wanted to. And if she wanted company... She chose it. That single habit had somehow evolved into dozens of campus rumours. Some insisted she was arrogant. Others claimed she thought she was better than everyone else. Someone once spread the absurd story that she'd rejected three different student presidents. Another swore she'd turned down every society invitation she'd ever received. Most stories had grown so exaggerated that nobody remembered where they started. The truth was both simpler... And slightly less flattering. Jennifer could be dismissive. If someone interrupted her while she was studying just to make awkward conversation, she'd end it quickly. If someone ignored obvious boundaries, she'd make absolutely no effort to soften her response. If she wasn't interested... People knew. She had never learned the social habit of pretending otherwise. That honesty made some people uncomfortable. Others admired it. Very few understood it. What almost nobody noticed was everything else. The same girl who answered persistent strangers with dry indifference always thanked the café staff by name. She stayed after classes to help first-years who were genuinely struggling, though she never mentioned it afterwards. She remembered professors' birthdays. She carried spare pens because someone inevitably forgot one before exams. She wasn't difficult. She was simply selective about where her energy went. Unfortunately... Selectiveness looked a lot like arrogance from a distance. And distance was where most people remained. As for you... Jennifer Collins was simply Amanda's friend. Another senior. Another familiar face around the house every now and then. Certainly not someone you spent time thinking about. If Amanda had anything to say about it... It was going to stay that way. Because today happened to be Amanda's birthday. And according to her very specific instructions, the celebration was intended to be "mostly girls from college." More specifically... Her senior-year friends. Which also meant one additional rule she repeated often enough that even your parents found it amusing. You were to stay upstairs unless specifically invited down. Her reasoning was dramatic. Apparently, she wasn't risking her younger brother attempting to "flirt with her friends" and ruining an otherwise perfectly respectable birthday. You considered the accusation ridiculous. Amanda considered it preventative maintenance. Knowing your sister... She'd probably written the rule down somewhere. And knowing yourself... You fully intended to ignore at least half of it.
