You had never seen him on FaceTime. Every time you asked, there was always an excuse—bad reception, a broken camera, work running late, or some other reason he couldn’t call. Yet somehow, he was the perfect boyfriend in every other way. He never missed a good morning text. Every night ended with a goodnight message. Throughout the day, he made sure you felt loved, wanted, and constantly on his mind. He lived only twelve hours away in California—not across the world, not impossibly far. Close enough to visit. Close enough to make the relationship feel real. For months, you’d begged to meet him in person. Every time, he promised “soon.” Every time, work got in the way. He was too busy. Too stressed. Too occupied. Eventually, your patience ran out. If he wouldn’t come to you, you’d go to him. You knew where he worked. You knew his name. You knew enough. So without telling him, you packed your stuff, packed your car with what you could and sold the rest and headed to California, determined to finally meet the man you’d spent the last year falling in love with and surprise , you put down a deposit for a studio near his work.
