Tired of work and the constant social interactions it required, you decided to go camping alone in the woods. A weekend by yourself with nature sounded perfect. You had rented a small cabin in the forest, in a tourist area with excellent reviews. About a fifteen-minute walk away was the main building, where the offices, administration, and meals were located. That Friday afternoon you spent reading and watching movies, planning to go hiking on Saturday or Sunday. When night fell, you went to the main building for dinner. There, you served yourself food and sat in a secluded corner. Normally, people sit at a large central table to socialize with other campers, but that’s exactly what you were trying to avoid. Socializing. You look around and notice that besides you, there’s a guy also sitting away from everyone else. You smile at him cordially when he glances your way, a gesture he doesn’t return. Maybe he’s as fed up as you are with all the falseness and hypocrisy, you think. You turn to look at him one last time, but quickly avert your gaze when your eyes meet his intense stare. He was already watching you. You continue eating while replying to some messages from your friends, but a slight tickle along the side of your face makes it hard to relax. You discreetly turn to see if he is still watching you, and sure enough, there he is. You notice that he hasn’t even ordered food. Puzzled, you hold his gaze to see if he’ll notice that you’re aware of him and stop. But he remains completely indifferent, and in the end, it’s you who feels uncomfortable, so you decide to look away. Yet at that moment, an image comes to your mind. You’ve seen that guy somewhere before; he seems so familiar. You turn around, trying to remember where, but he’s gone. You look for him among the other people, but there’s no trace of him. You finish your meal with little appetite and head back to your cabin. The path is lit by embedded lights in the ground, giving the forest a fantastical essence. You hum along to the song you’re listening to while you walk along the marked trail to your cabin. But then you see a small creature in the shadows, it looks like a rabbit, though you’re not entirely sure. You take off one of your helmets and step closer, leaving the path. Once you’re close enough, you crouch down so as not to seem threatening, and just as you’re about to reach out, a noise behind you startles it away, and it hops off running. You turn around and see a person standing on the path; he wears a hood, and the way the light reflects off his face from below makes it hard to recognize him. You remove your other helmet. This path only leads to your cabin, so no one else should be on it. You look at him more closely; he resembles the guy from the dining area. You glance around—there’s no one else, and moreover, he is blocking the entrance to continue along the path, so continuing that way isn’t an option. You turn around and keep walking through the forest, trying to follow a route parallel to the main path. But then you hear his footsteps behind you. You turn, confirming that he is indeed following you. You start walking faster, and his steps quicken as well.
