Lord Vargor Bane

The story follows the fate of Elena – a brilliant, calculating assassin from the modern world who, after death, receives a second chance at life. However, she ends up inside a fantasy novel, becoming Lady Elena von Valerius. In the original book's script, the girl was supposed to persecute the main heroine out of jealousy, vie for the affections of the crown prince, Christopher, and finally – hated by everyone – rot in a harsh cell. With the mature mind of a 38-year-old, icy blue eyes, and ruthless training, Elena refuses the role of a victim. In a world where women are only pawns, and her own family chases power, the girl executes a brilliant political chess game. She convinces her parents that instead of serving a weak prince, it is better to strike at the very top and form an alliance with the frozen North. Elena is driven by pure pragmatism. She sends a letter proposing marriage to Lord Vargor – a powerful, 35-year-old warrior with a burned and scarred face, who rules the ice kingdom with an iron fist, has no wife, and desperately needs an heir. At this moment, the book's plot irreversibly breaks. Prince Christopher, accustomed to Elena having been blindly devoted to him since childhood and begging for his attention, experiences a deep shock. When her official, icy-cold refusal to join the harem of concubines reaches his court, something dangerous awakens in the young heir. The girl who was once an obvious, boring toy suddenly becomes an unconquerable fortress. Christopher, consumed by morbid pride and a burgeoning obsession, begins to take an interest in Elena more than ever before. He cannot bear the thought that his former friend prefers to give herself to the monstrous "Butcher of the North." This is a story of escape from a predetermined fate, brutal politics, and the clash of two predators – Elena and Alistair. However, fleeing to the frozen wastelands, Elena must now face not only the harsh winter but also a determined prince who, out of jealousy and wounded ego, is ready to unleash a civil war just to reclaim the girl who dared to spurn him. The world in which the action takes place is called Aurelia and is a dark, ruthless fantasy universe where late medieval brutality mixes with raw, physical magic. Geographically and socially, it is a land of deep contrasts, divided into two clashing regions. The South (Kingdom of Aurelia) This is a land of eternal sun, wealth, and apparent civilization, ruled grandly by the von Aurelius dynasty. The architecture of the South is monumental, full of white marble, golden domes, and geometric gardens. Life at the court in the capital revolves around almost Byzantine splendor, balls, and complicated political intrigues. However, it is a deeply patriarchal, superficial, and rotten-from-the-inside world. Women from noble houses (such as von Valerius) are treated solely as currency in marriage alliances or decorations in the heir's harem of concubines. A cult of youth, perfect appearance, and impeccable manners prevails here. Any stain on one's image means social death. The Frozen North (Autonomy of the Ice Pass) Geographic opposite of the capital – a harsh, wild, and inaccessible land of eternal winter, powerful mountain ranges, and impenetrable, dark forests. Instead of marble palaces, monumental, austere fortresses of black ice stone, embedded in the rocks, rise here. The most powerful of them is Lord Vargor's castle. Life in the North is a daily struggle for survival against nature and the bloodthirsty winter beasts that regularly press against the borders of human settlements. Here, no one cares about court etiquette, silks, or beautiful faces. Only loyalty, physical strength, usefulness to the clan, and the ability to wield a sword in a frozen hand matter. Magic of Blood, Earth, and Metal Magic in this world is not common, and using it carries a real, physical cost: Magic of Light and Healing: Represented by the book's main heroine (a healer). Although seemingly helpful, its higher levels are based on a dark secret – manipulation of life forces and draining energy from other beings to maintain youth and heal rulers' wounds. Magic of Earth and Metal: A primal, raw force wielded by Lord Vargor. It allows control over the terrain's structure, triggering avalanches, crumbling fortress walls, and manipulating the iron in enemies' armor and swords. A side effect of this magic is the characteristic golden specks in the pupils, which burn out the mage's eyesight with excessive use. Beasts of Frostfire: The northern wastelands are inhabited by rare, legendary monsters, led by ice dragons. Their breath does not freeze but spews blue, frosty fire that burns human flesh to the bone, leaving cyan, armor-hardened scars that no healing magic can cure. Magical Amulets and Artifacts Items saturated with magic are extremely rare and expensive in Aurelia and constitute the military and political strength of each house. They do not work on their own – they require constant feeding with the user's energy, blood, or a direct connection to their personal type of magic. Depending on the materials used and the creator's intentions, artifacts with vastly different properties can be produced. There are powerful battle rings and pendants that can sense earth vibrations, detect hidden dangers in buildings, and enhance armor hardness. On the other hand, craftsmen can create luxurious utility and spy items – necklaces woven from illusions that can completely hide the user's age or physical blemishes, as well as control talismans capable of enforcing short-term obedience or manipulating the human mind. Alchemy and Elixirs Brewing potions is a universal, dangerous, and dirty science specialized in by a few scholars, herbalists, and assassins. A properly brewed elixir can dramatically change the course of a battle or silently and without a trace eliminate a political enemy. Alchemists can distill substances with a wide spectrum of effects. Warriors often reach for thick battle potions before fights, which put the body into a state of controlled frenzy, cut off the sense of pain, and drastically increase physical strength at the cost of later severe exhaustion. In medicine and assassination, the most popular are elixirs with variable concentration – administered in small doses, they act as a rapid painkiller and regenerative agent, but in larger quantities, they become an odorless, respiratory muscle-paralyzing poison. There are also specialized infusions granting temporary resistance to specific elements, such as ice or fire, allowing ordinary people to fight mages. Political System and the Specter of War Aurelia stands on the brink of civil war. Although the king nominally rules everything, the North under Vargor enjoys full military and economic autonomy, controlling the only deposits of magical ores necessary for forging weapons and rare alchemical ingredients. The capital desperately wants to get its hands on these riches but fears the power of Vargor's army. Elena's escape to the North and rejection of the prince becomes a spark thrown onto a powder keg – the perfect political pretext for the South to break treaties and strike at the ice kingdom. In the Kingdom of Aurelia, strict, ruthless rules govern daily life both in the opulent South and the wild North. The entire system is based on the law of the stronger, family pacts, and absolute pragmatism. 1. Law of Blood and Lineage (Absolute Patriarchy) Women as political currency: Women from noble houses have no voting rights or decision-making autonomy. From birth, they are raised as tools for making marriage alliances. System of concubinage: The crown prince and the highest dignitaries have the right to have official concubines. This status, although prestigious for the girl's family, in practice means a complete loss of freedom and being a luxurious possession of the ruler. Obligation of an heir: Every lord and ruler of lands has an absolute duty to father a male heir of pure blood to maintain the loyalty of their vassals. Lack of an heir after the age of thirty is considered a weakness and a political threat, provoking neighboring houses to rebellion. 2. Law of the Sword and Autonomy of the North Right to defend borders: The North, although formally subject to the crown, governs itself by its own law due to the harsh climate and the threat from beasts. The Lord of the North has absolute judicial power over his lands – his word is law, and the crown does not interfere in his internal judgments. Taxes and ores: The relationship between the capital and the North is based on a strict trade pact. The North supplies the crown with unique magical metals and raw materials, and in return, the capital does not interfere in the affairs of the Ice Pass's autonomy. Violating this pact means an immediate state of war. 3. Law of the Stronger and Public Justice Brutality instead of diplomacy: In the North, betrayal, deceit, or lies are not resolved through judicial proceedings or complicated intrigues. The punishment for breaking one's word or theft is immediate death – sentences are carried out publicly (often by beheading), serving as a warning to others. Cult of usefulness: In the kingdom, especially in the harsh wastelands, a person's status depends on their usefulness to the community. Weak, cowardly, or incapable individuals quickly lose respect and position, regardless of their origin. 4. Control of Magic and Artifacts Monopoly on knowledge: Magic, elixirs, and amulets are strictly controlled by the power elite. Ordinary citizens have no right to possess or trade artifacts. Any unregistered mage or alchemist operating without the local lord's permission is considered an outlaw and pursued. Price for power: Every use of magic carries a physical price (loss of life force, burning of eyesight). The kingdom's rule states clearly: if you are not able to pay with your own health or blood for the use of an artifact, magic will destroy you.
