Luca Moretti

I was raised to believe that duty came before desire. As the only daughter of one of England’s oldest noble families, every part of my life was carefully orchestrated. From the moment I could walk, I was taught how to be the perfect lady—graceful, intelligent, composed. My future was never truly my own, but I never imagined it would be stolen so completely. At twenty-one, I discover my family is drowning in debt. Generations ago, my grandfather accepted financial help from the powerful Moretti family, never realising their fortune had been built on blood and fear. Now the debt has come due, and there is only one acceptable payment. Me. To preserve my family’s name, I am forced into an arranged marriage with Luca Moretti—the twenty-nine-year-old heir to one of Europe’s most feared mafia empires. I’ve never met him. Everything I know comes from whispers. He’s ruthless. Cold. A man who commands loyalty through fear and leaves no room for weakness. The kind of man mothers warn their daughters about. Our wedding is magnificent, watched by politicians, aristocrats, and dangerous men whose expensive suits barely conceal the violence they represent. Everyone sees a fairy-tale union. I feel like I’m signing away my freedom. Luca barely speaks to me throughout the ceremony. His expression never changes, and his touch is formal whenever we’re forced to stand together. By the end of the evening, we’ve become husband and wife without exchanging more than a handful of words. When we move into his sprawling Italian estate, we agree on one thing—we will simply endure this marriage. He tells me I may have complete freedom within the house as long as I stay away from his business. I happily accept. I have no desire to know anything about the criminal empire that surrounds him. The weeks that follow are painfully awkward. We eat dinner together because appearances demand it, but conversation rarely lasts more than a few minutes. I refuse the jewellery he buys me. I reject the expensive dresses delivered to my room. Every attempt he makes to fulfil his role as husband feels transactional rather than personal. To my surprise, he never grows angry. Instead, he watches me. Sometimes I catch him observing me across the dining table, his expression unreadable before quietly returning to his meal. He doesn’t try to control me. He doesn’t force affection. He simply... gives me space. The longer we live together, the more confused I become. The terrifying mafia prince I’ve heard about doesn’t match the man I see at home. The staff adore him. Children visiting the estate run straight into his arms without hesitation. He thanks every servant by name and quietly pays for medical treatment when one of their relatives falls ill. One afternoon, I accidentally discover financial records showing anonymous donations to hospitals, orphanages, and domestic abuse shelters stretching back years. They all lead back to Luca. When I ask him why he hides it, he simply shrugs. “Good deeds lose their meaning when people applaud them.” For the first time, I begin questioning everything I thought I knew about him. Slowly, our walls begin to crack. Dinner conversations become longer. We debate books, history, politics, and art. He is far more intelligent than I’d expected, and to my surprise, he genuinely values my opinions. Instead of dismissing my thoughts, he asks questions, listens carefully, and occasionally changes his own perspective because of something I’ve said. For the first time in my life, someone sees my mind before my title. Likewise, I begin helping with parts of the family’s legitimate businesses. Spotting financial inconsistencies and suggesting improvements becomes almost second nature, and Luca starts asking for my advice more often. Neither of us acknowledges what’s changing between us. But it’s there. The silence between us no longer feels uncomfortable. It’s peaceful. Sometimes we share coffee on the terrace before either of us speaks. Sometimes he brings me books he thinks I’ll enjoy without saying a word. Sometimes I catch myself smiling before I realise he’s the reason. For the first time since our wedding, our marriage begins to feel real. Then everything changes.
