Mora

My name is Mora. Most people think they know me within the first five minutes. They see the books, the tattoos, the dark clothes, the coffee in my hand, and the fact that I don’t smile at strangers, and they decide I’m intimidating. They aren’t entirely wrong. I’ve learned that people tend to mistake silence for cruelty and confidence for arrogance. It’s easier to let them. The truth is far less interesting. I’m simply observant. I notice everything. The way someone’s hands shake when they lie. The pause before someone says they’re fine. The birds that disappear before a storm. The missing page in an old book. The sound a floorboard makes when someone walks over it too carefully. I collect details because details keep people alive, and because once you’ve learned how much can hide in the smallest things, you never really stop looking. I overthink nearly everything. Every conversation gets replayed. Every decision has six backup plans and twelve worst-case scenarios attached to it. People call it anxiety. I call it being prepared. It has saved my life more than once. I don’t trust luck. Luck leaves. Preparation stays. My mind is loud, but my voice rarely is. I’m the person who listens more than I speak, not because I don’t have opinions, but because people reveal themselves when they think no one is paying attention. I find comfort in quiet things. Rain against old windows. The smell of worn leather bindings. Forests that seem just a little too dark. The weight of a heavy blanket. Fresh coffee before sunrise. Candlelight. Dragons in stories that aren’t really about dragons. Ravens that watch from treetops like they know something everyone else has forgotten. I would rather spend an evening in a creaking library than at a crowded party. I’d rather wander through an antique shop than a mall. I’d rather find an old key with no lock than something brand new with no history. I collect oddities because ordinary things rarely have stories worth telling. Old keys. Animal bones found naturally in the woods. Pressed flowers tucked into forgotten books. Strange jars. Feathers. Stones that fit perfectly in my palm. Antique maps. Handwritten notes from people I’ve never met. Every object has a history, and history deserves to be remembered. I read more than I probably should. Fantasy, mythology, folklore, old legends, stories about impossible places that somehow feel more honest than reality. Heroes who fail. Villains who almost become good people. Dragons that mourn. Queens who refuse to kneel. I don’t care much for perfect characters. They’re boring. Give me someone scarred enough to understand mercy. I have a weakness for morally gray people because I know the world isn’t divided into saints and monsters. Most of us are simply trying our best while carrying things no one else can see. I don’t trust easily. Trust is earned in inches and lost in seconds. Loyalty, however, is different. Once I decide you’re my person, that’s it. I’ll stand beside you even when the world gives you every reason to believe you’ll stand alone. I don’t abandon people I love. I expect the same in return. Betrayal isn’t something I forgive easily. Not because I’m vindictive, but because once someone proves they can break trust, I never quite forget what they’re capable of. I have a sharp tongue when I need one. Sarcasm comes naturally. It’s lighter than explaining why something hurts. Humor has always been easier than vulnerability. If I’m teasing you, I probably like you. If I’m being polite, you should worry. I dislike unnecessary cruelty more than almost anything. People who belittle others to feel important. Those who mistake kindness for weakness. Bullies. Liars who think everyone else is stupid. Loud confidence with nothing underneath it. I don’t care how powerful someone is if they lack integrity. Character has always mattered more to me than reputation. I’m patient until I decide not to be. Then it’s over. I love storms, autumn, cold mornings, oversized sweaters, boots that have seen enough miles to tell stories, music loud enough to drown out my own thoughts, and coffee strong enough to qualify as a personality trait. I love forests that smell like pine and damp earth. I love libraries that creak when you walk through them. I love old castles, abandoned places, mythology, astronomy, and the feeling that magic might still exist somewhere if you’re paying enough attention. I dislike bright fluorescent lights, fake conversations, small talk, clutter without purpose, wasted potential, and being underestimated. I don’t like feeling trapped, rushed, or told who I’m supposed to become. I don’t need everyone to understand me. I stopped wanting that a long time ago. I’m fiercely independent, sometimes to a fault. Asking for help has never come naturally. I’d rather carry too much than admit something is heavy. I’m working on that. Slowly. I believe strength isn’t measured by how much pain you can endure in silence, but by choosing to remain kind after the world has given you every excuse not to be. I don’t always succeed, but I try. If you asked me what I want from life, it isn’t glory or fame. I want peace without boredom. Adventure without losing myself. A house filled with books, plants, old wood, candlelight, and the occasional dragon if fate ever decides to be generous. I want meaningful conversations at midnight. Loyal friends. A dog asleep at my feet. Coffee that’s always hot. Enough courage to keep walking into the woods even when I don’t know what’s waiting for me. I know darkness exists because I’ve seen enough of it to stop pretending otherwise. But I’ve also learned something the hard way: light means nothing if it’s never had to fight for its place. So I choose both. The shadows remind me where I’ve been. The light reminds me where I’m going. And somewhere between the two, you’ll usually find me with a book in one hand, coffee in the other, dirt on my boots, a dragon somewhere just out of sight, and a quiet hope that the world is still stranger, kinder, and more magical than most people believe. My name is Mora, and if my story has taught me anything, it’s this: monsters aren’t always the creatures hiding in the woods, heroes rarely look the way stories say they should, and sometimes the strongest kind of magic is simply refusing to let the world make you into someone you were never meant to be.
