Nathan Reed

Nathan Reed is 39 years old, an imposing 1.92 meters tall, and heads the department for negotiation strategy, behavioral analysis, and risk assessment at an internationally active security and crisis consulting firm based in New York. Where other people see conflicts, Nathan recognizes patterns. Where others are guided by emotions, he analyzes facts, body language, and behavior. His task is not to intimidate people, but to understand them. For many years, he has been regarded as one of the best behavioral analysts in his field. He detects contradictions in statements, notices the smallest changes in body language, and understands how to assess people like few others. His colleagues often joke that Nathan doesn't need to ask questions – he usually already knows the answers. Nathan was born in Boston as the eldest son of a respected defense attorney and a professor of psychology. From an early age, he grew up among bookshelves, universities, and courthouses. While other children played soccer outside, Nathan devoured crime novels, nonfiction, and scientific literature about human behavior. His mother often joked that her son asked more questions than her students. Even as a child, he wanted to know why people lied, why some remained calm despite fear, and why two people could use the same words but hide completely different intentions behind them. At the age of eleven, Nathan consciously began to observe people. Not out of mistrust, but out of curiosity. He made notes about how teachers reacted when they became nervous, which classmates suddenly blinked faster or hid their hands when cheating, and which adults tried to cover up insecurity with exaggerated friendliness. At that time, no one knew that this extraordinary gift for observation would one day determine his profession. After school, Nathan studied psychology with a focus on behavioral analysis and criminology. Even during his studies, he stood out to his professors because of his extraordinary powers of comprehension. He recognized connections that others missed, reconstructed the course of conversations almost flawlessly, and could often assess people with astonishing precision even though he barely knew them. After graduating, he moved to the FBI. Initially he worked there as an analyst, but it quickly became clear that his abilities went far beyond classic investigative work. He supported negotiation teams in hostage situations, analyzed serial crimes, created offender profiles, and advised incident commanders in particularly complex situations. His task was rarely to stand spectacularly in the spotlight. Instead, he worked in the background – calmly, analytically, and with a precision that had already saved lives on several occasions. While others hunted perpetrators, Nathan tried to predict what step they would take next. With his 1.92 meters, Nathan has an imposing appearance. His body is broadly built, muscular, and athletic, but not in the conspicuous way of a bodybuilder. His strong shoulders, defined arms, and trained back are the result of years of discipline, not vanity. He doesn't train to impress others, but because physical fitness is as natural to him as brushing his teeth. His posture is upright, his movements controlled and efficient. No step seems hectic or unnecessary. He radiates a natural authority without ever having to demonstrate it. Nathan wears his dark blond hair slightly longer than most men his age. It is usually styled neatly backward or to the side, which makes his striking facial features stand out particularly well. A well-groomed three-day beard gives him an additional mature, masculine aura. His steel-blue eyes are probably his most striking feature. They seem attentive, calm, and piercing at the same time. Many people feel unsettled by his gaze, even though Nathan never deliberately stares at them. In fact, he is simply completely focused on the person opposite him. Anyone who speaks with Nathan quickly gets the feeling that nothing escapes him – and most of the time, that is exactly right. Unlike Luca or Mateo, Nathan doesn't have any visible tattoos. Not because he has anything against them, but because they never suited his personality. He prefers understated elegance over flashy statements. His clothing style is classic, high-quality, and timeless. Tailored shirts, dark trousers, cashmere sweaters, well-fitting coats, and high-quality leather shoes define his everyday life. Even in his free time, Nathan always looks well-groomed without appearing polished. Jewelry hardly interests him. Only a high-quality wristwatch has accompanied him for many years and reminds him that time is often a person's most valuable resource. Nathan is one of those people who change a room without becoming loud. He never seeks attention, yet it often turns toward him. While others try to make an impression with charm or volume, one calm look is often enough for Nathan. His presence is created not by dominance in the classic sense, but by confidence. He knows who he is, what he can do, and when he has to act. That is exactly why people listen to him. He speaks little. And that is exactly why his words carry weight. Nathan almost never interrupts others. He listens attentively, gathers information, and only then forms an opinion. He rarely makes decisions spontaneously, but rather on the basis of all available facts. Nevertheless, they never seem hesitant. Once Nathan has made a decision, there is no reason for him to doubt it anymore. His dominance is not shown through volume or intimidation. Nathan doesn't need to control anyone in order to radiate authority. He takes responsibility as a matter of course and formulates his decisions calmly and clearly. Instead of asking whether someone could take something over, he simply says: “We'll do it this way.” It is neither a threat nor a command – rather, a quiet matter of course. People follow him because they know that Nathan never acts out of selfishness. He weighs every decision carefully and accepts the consequences when something goes wrong. His extraordinary understanding of people is at once his greatest strength and his greatest burden. Nathan analyzes constantly. He registers the smallest changes in facial expression, recognizes insecurity in minimal muscle movements, and often notices within just a few minutes when someone isn't telling him the truth. He cannot simply switch off this ability. Even with friends, his mind keeps working. While other people simply have conversations, Nathan interprets tone, direction of gaze, and body language. Sometimes he envies people because they can simply get to know someone without having to analyze them at the same time. For Nathan, it often feels as if his brain automatically tells him a second story about every person – one that lies hidden beneath the spoken words. Perhaps that is exactly the reason why he values calm so much. After particularly long days, Nathan often simply sits silently by the window with a cup of coffee, watches the Hudson River, and enjoys the rare moments in which his mind doesn't have to work for a moment. Whoever meets Nathan Reed first sees the calm, controlled, and extraordinarily intelligent behavioral analyst. But whoever truly gets to know him discovers a loyal, responsible, and profound man whose greatest strength is understanding people – and whose greatest weakness is exactly the same ability. Those who meet Nathan for the first time often consider him aloof. Not arrogant, not cold, but simply hard to grasp. He is one of those people who prefer listening over talking. While others try to create a pleasant conversational atmosphere as quickly as possible, Nathan automatically analyzes his counterpart. He registers the handshake, posture, speed of speech, eye contact, and even the smallest changes in breathing or facial expression. The problem is that he cannot simply switch off this ability. It has long since become a part of him. Even with his closest friends, it happens unconsciously. While others simply have a conversation, Nathan notices the smallest contradictions or emotions that his counterpart may not even be aware of. He sees the tension in the shoulders even though someone is smiling. He notices when someone claims everything is fine but nervously taps their fingers or avoids eye contact. His brain works nonstop. It analyzes, evaluates, and pieces information together. Sometimes Nathan envies people because they can simply get to know someone without immediately interpreting their body language, choice of words, or mood. For him, it often feels as if his head automatically tells him a second, invisible story about every person. Perhaps that is exactly the reason why Nathan values calm so much. Not because people exhaust him, but because his own mind never stands still. After particularly long working days, he sometimes simply sits on his terrace, looks out over the Hudson River, and enjoys the rare feeling of not having to analyze anything for a moment. Nathan loves control. Not over other people, though, but over his own life. He has a fixed place for everything. His keys always lie in the same bowl next to the front door, his wallet is on exactly the same dresser every evening, and even his running shoes stand side by side with millimeter precision. His desk looks almost sterile. Every pen lies parallel, every file is sorted, and his computer screen never shows more than the programs he currently needs. Chaos doesn't make him nervous – it merely costs him unnecessary energy. His wardrobe looks as if it had been planned by an interior designer. Shirts hang sorted by color, shoes stand neatly side by side, and even his sweaters are folded exactly. Mateo regularly claims that Nathan even sorts his cereal alphabetically. Nathan then usually just briefly looks up from his coffee and replies dryly: “No. By expiration date.” It usually takes two seconds before the others laugh. Exercise is just as much a matter of course in Nathan's daily life as brushing his teeth. He doesn't train because he wants to look as impressive as possible, but because movement is the only way to quiet his mind for a short time. Almost every morning he gets up around five-thirty and runs several kilometers along the Hudson River. By the time the city slowly wakes up, Nathan has usually already finished his first workout. Afterwards, he spends an hour doing strength training. No music, no selfies, no videos. Only focused work. His body is the result of years of discipline. With his 1.92 meters, broad shoulders, strong arms, and defined musculature, he looks impressive without seeming overdone. His strength is not an end in itself – it is just as functional as everything else in his life. In addition, Nathan has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing for many years. Both sports fascinate him because they require patience, control, and precision. Aggression doesn't interest him. Technique, on the other hand, all the more. Like everyone else, Nathan lives in the small residential complex right on the Hudson River. The modern building complex consists of three interconnected houses that enclose a spacious, green inner courtyard. Everyone has their own completely independent apartment with plenty of privacy. Nevertheless, the complex feels more like a small village in the middle of New York than an ordinary residential building. The front doors are often open, the children run back and forth between the apartments, and hardly a day goes by without someone spontaneously meeting in the inner courtyard. Nathan's apartment reflects his personality perfectly. Large windows let in plenty of daylight, dark wood meets warm colors, and bookshelves are everywhere. Nathan now owns more than two thousand books. Psychology, criminalistics, history, philosophy, and biographies fill a large part of his library. But hidden among all the nonfiction books are also fantasy novels, classics, and old crime stories. No one in his circle of friends would have suspected that Nathan secretly loves Tolkien or knows the stories of Sherlock Holmes almost by heart. In his living room, there are also several chessboards from different countries that he collected during his time at the FBI. Each one reminds him of a place and a story. The inner courtyard forms the heart of the small community. On summer evenings, people grill there, birthdays are celebrated together, and the children regularly turn the garden into their own little adventure playground. Nathan spends less time there than Mateo, but even he enjoys these evenings. Usually he sits a bit off to the side with a cup of coffee or a glass of whiskey, listens to the conversations, and watches the colorful hustle and bustle with a barely visible smile. He doesn't participate in every conversation – but when he says something, everyone listens. For Nathan, this place means far more than just an apartment. After years full of hotels, business trips, and anonymous apartments, the residential complex on the Hudson River is the first place in a long time that truly feels like home. Luca, Olivia, Cassian, Tilda, Mateo, Emilia, and Soren have long since become more than friends. They are family. Although Nathan himself has no children, he seems to have a very special effect on them. Perhaps precisely because he never tries to be particularly funny or childlike. He treats children with the same respect as adults. He listens to them attentively, answers their questions seriously, and takes every one of their stories seriously. By now, Luise and Noah, the children of Cassian and Tilda, are just as naturally part of his everyday life as Sophia and Leo, the children of Luca and Olivia. And Mateo's and Emilia's four whirlwinds – the twins Clara and Elias as well as Mila and Theo – also regularly storm into his apartment unannounced because they know exactly that “Uncle Nathan” almost always has time for a game, a puzzle, or a story. While the adults sometimes lose track, Nathan remains astonishingly calm. He builds with Lego for hours, patiently explains the rules of chess to Luise, answers Sophia's endless why-questions with the same seriousness as a difficult negotiation, and has no problem carrying Theo in his arms at the same time, stopping Mila from rearranging his books, and convincing Elias that bookshelves are not climbing frames. He shows his greatest patience, however, when reading aloud. With different voices, perfect timing, and a calm that captivates even the most hyperactive children within a few minutes, he reads stories so vividly that the little ones hang on his every word every time. To this day, Mateo claims Nathan secretly has a superpower because he regularly manages to get eight excited children enthusiastic about a book at the same time. Nathan himself merely comments on that with a shrug. “Children want to be taken seriously.” He needs no further explanation. Many people believe Nathan has no sense of humor. In fact, he is one of the funniest people in the group – only in a way that is easily overlooked. His humor is dry, intelligent, and completely unexpected. When Mateo announces with exaggerated self-confidence, “I think I'm a genius,” Nathan doesn't even look up from his newspaper and calmly replies: “Faith, as everyone knows, can move mountains.” It takes a moment for everyone to process the sentence – and that is exactly when the laughter usually breaks out. His friendships mean more to Nathan than he would ever openly admit. He has known Cassian for many years. Between the two of them, there is a mutual respect that hardly needs words. While Cassian develops long-term strategies, Nathan recognizes human weaknesses and thinks several steps ahead. Together, they complement each other almost perfectly. Luca probably trusts Nathan more than anyone else outside his own family. The two often don't need to speak at all. A brief glance is enough, and both know what the other is thinking. Nathan admires Luca's ability to give people hope, while Luca almost never doubts Nathan's judgment. Mateo, in turn, makes sure that Nathan doesn't lose himself completely in his work. He regularly stands unannounced at his apartment door to take him along to a barbecue or a spontaneous outing. Nathan claims every time that he has no time. Mateo basically ignores that. He has long known that Nathan comes along in the end anyway. And surprisingly, Nathan enjoys exactly this persistence. He shares a quiet friendship with Soren. The two can sit next to each other for hours, each working on their laptop, and barely exchange a word. To outsiders, that seems strange. To Nathan and Soren, it feels completely natural. Despite all his discipline, Nathan has a weakness that his friends know all too well. When a case or a problem occupies him, he forgets everything else. He works deep into the night, sleeps too little, doesn't answer messages, and often notices much too late that he hasn't eaten anything for hours. Not on purpose, but because his mind is completely immersed in his work. Cassian regularly reminds him to call it a day. Luca occasionally checks whether Nathan has eaten at all. Mateo goes one step further. When Nathan once again barely comes out of his study for days, Mateo places a casserole dish or a lasagna in front of his door without comment. Without ringing the bell. Nathan knows exactly who the food is from every time. The next morning, he sends Mateo only a short message. “The lasagna was good.” That's all it takes between them.
