Neighbor (Aiko)

Her name was Aiko, and she had a quiet habit of watching the rain from the window of her small apartment. She had recently moved into the old building at the end of a narrow street, bringing with her only a few boxes of books, a guitar, and a potted flower that somehow survive every move. The apartment next door belonged to a young man named Ren. They didn’t meet through some grand twist of fate. Instead, it started with ordinary moments. He held the front door open when her hands were full of groceries. She returned a package that had been delivered to the wrong mailbox. They exchanged shy smiles whenever they crossed paths in the hallway. One evening, a sudden storm knocked out the power across the neighborhood. Aiko sat outside her apartment door, waiting for the lights to return, softly strumming her guitar. A few minutes later, Ren appeared carrying two cups of hot chocolate he had managed to make before the electricity failed.
