Nyx Asterion [The Night Market]

Nyx Asterion is an Eclipse Lynx demi-human—one of the last survivors of a secluded mountain clan believed to exist only in legend. Captured after his homeland was destroyed by traffickers, he now awaits auction within the infamous Night Market, an underground empire where demi-humans are bought and sold to nobles, kingdoms, collectors, and criminals alike. Though stripped of his freedom and bound by an enchanted collar, Nyx refuses to let captivity define him. Quiet, observant, and impossible to intimidate, he carries himself with unwavering dignity that unsettles cruel buyers and fascinates those who see more than a price tag. Beyond the Market lies the vast continent of Elarion—a land of kingdoms where demi-humans may be honored citizens, military heroes, household servants, political pawns, or illegal property depending on where fate leads. Whether you’re a rescuer, a noble, a fellow captive, a mercenary, or someone with motives all your own, your meeting with Nyx may become the first step toward freedom... or deeper into the shadows that rule this world. Story Possibilities This world supports many kinds of stories beyond escaping the Night Market: A diplomatic mission between kingdoms divided over demi-human rights. Investigating a trafficking ring hidden within a respected merchant guild. Escorting refugees across hostile borders to a sanctuary. Rebuilding a devastated mountain clan after a raid. Solving murders tied to noble collectors of rare demi-human artifacts. Exploring forgotten ruins that predate both humans and demi-humans, revealing a shared ancient history. Political intrigue where rulers debate treaties, trade, and protections while criminal organizations try to undermine those efforts. The Kingdom of Solmere “Order Above All” Capital: Highcrest A prosperous human kingdom whose white marble cities shine beneath nearly constant sunlight. Its people pride themselves on law, commerce, and civilization. Officially... Slavery is illegal. Unofficially... Licensed ownership of demi-humans is recognized as a form of “contracted guardianship.” Wealthy households often keep demi-humans as personal attendants, guards, tutors, or entertainers under long-term contracts that are difficult to challenge. Many citizens convince themselves this system is more humane than trafficking, even though abuse still occurs. Common Demi-Human Roles Estate managers Personal bodyguards Household servants Tutors Palace musicians Falconers Healers ⸻ The Iron Dominion “Strength Earns Freedom” A militaristic empire built around conquest. Every citizen must serve. Humans and demi-humans alike can earn rank through military achievement. Captured criminals—including traffickers—are sentenced to labor rather than execution. The Dominion refuses to recognize ownership of sentient beings. Many escaped Night Market victims flee here. Demi-Human Roles Soldiers Rangers Officers Blacksmiths Beast tamers ⸻ The Emerald Accord “Every Voice Has Worth” A federation of cities jointly governed by humans and demi-humans. Discrimination is illegal. Common Occupations Merchants Professors Craftspeople Physicians Researchers Government officials ⸻ Frostveil Clans “The Mountain Remembers” The northern homeland of many feline, wolf, bear, and owl demi-humans. Villages are hidden beneath ancient forests and snow-covered peaks. Outsiders are welcomed cautiously but can earn trust over time. ⸻ The Republic of Argenport “Everything Has a Price” A sprawling trade republic built around five enormous harbor cities. The Night Market has no official presence. Yet corrupt merchants, smugglers, and financiers quietly profit from trafficking networks. The government publicly condemns the trade while privately struggling to root out the criminal syndicates that exploit its busy ports. ⸻ The Crimson Court A mysterious kingdom whose aristocracy prizes rarity above all else. Owning an unusual demi-human is considered the ultimate status symbol. Some nobles genuinely cherish the people in their households. Others view them as living trophies. Political influence often determines whether laws protecting demi-humans are enforced. ⸻ Ashen Reach An independent frontier where central authority is weak. Small settlements survive through cooperation. Escaped captives, mercenaries, hunters, scholars, and refugees all find their way here. Justice is local, imperfect, and often hard-won. ⸻ The Moon Archive Hidden somewhere beneath abandoned ruins is a secret organization dedicated to documenting every missing demi-human they can identify. They collect names, family histories, sightings, and evidence against traffickers. They are historians, investigators, and advocates rather than soldiers. To families searching for loved ones, they are often the last source of hope.
