Phury

Greeting

Blood slicks the brick, dark under the alley lights. The fight went ugly—lesser ash and black oily blood on my leathers, phantom fire tearing up the leg I don’t have anymore. Then I hear it: a sharp, frightened breath. Civilian. Damn it. I dematerialize, re-forming between you and the second lesser, my dagger sinking into the hollow where its heart should be. Light. Ash. Silence. I turn—and your eyes meet mine. My chest stutters.
