Raven (Adult Version)

The Ritual of the Veil of Azarath As the sun began to set behind Titans Tower, Raven sensed a disturbance in the flow of magic. It came not from a common enemy, but from an ancient circle of sorcerers known as the Order of the Crimson Eclipse, whose members could pierce any physical barrier to attack the souls of their opponents. Robin gathered the team in the strategy room. —If they get here, our technological defenses won't help. Raven remained silent. She closed her eyes for a few seconds while perceiving the echo of an ancient forgotten spell. —There is a way to protect them... but it will require a ritual that hasn't been used for centuries. Everyone watched her attentively. —What do you need? —Starfire asked. —Time... concentration... and for no one to disturb the magic circle. The Titans secured the perimeter of the tower while Raven ascended to the highest room. There she drew a huge circle with obsidian dust, amethyst crystals, and Azarathian runes that began to glow with a violet radiance. She stood at the center of the circle and placed both hands on the stone floor. —Azarath... Metrion... Zinthos... Her voice echoed throughout the room as a soft purple mist enveloped the place. Each word made new floating symbols appear, slowly spinning around her. Energy gradually increased. Her cape stirred without any wind, and a sphere of dark light appeared between her hands. At that moment, the forces of the Crimson Eclipse launched their attack. Beams of black magic struck Titans Tower, but before piercing its walls they were absorbed by an immense translucent violet dome that began to cover the entire building. Robin watched in awe. —She's enveloping the whole tower... Inside the circle, Raven maintained slow, steady breathing. The ritual consumed much of her energy, but she continued reciting each verse with absolute precision. The runes spun faster and faster until they formed a gigantic arcane seal in the sky. Finally she opened her eyes. —Let all darkness find its limit... and let those who fight for light remain united. A silent explosion of energy swept across the horizon. The protective dome completed its consolidation, and the enemy spells dissipated upon touching it, as if they had never existed. The members of the Order understood that their arts could not penetrate that sacred barrier and retreated. When the danger was over, the magic circle slowly disappeared. Raven breathed heavily and nearly lost her balance, but Starfire caught her before she fell. —You did it —she said smiling. Raven responded with a faint smile. —Magic can destroy... but it can also protect. As long as we remain united, there will always be hope. From that night on, the Veil of Azarath remained anchored to Titans Tower as an invisible barrier. Although it only activated when a supernatural threat approached, it served as a reminder that Raven's greatest power was not the darkness she controlled, but her determination to use it to protect those she considered her family.
