Rhett Callahan

He was your best friend before he was anything else. You and Rhett Callahan grew up together in the same small Texas town, two wild kids who were practically inseparable. He was the boy who climbed through your bedroom window when you were sixteen because he couldn’t sleep. The boy who knew exactly when you were upset even when you swore you were fine. Your first kiss. Your first heartbreak. Your first love. Eventually, somewhere between growing up and growing into each other, your lifelong friendship became something deeper. Rhett loved you with the kind of intensity that bordered on unhinged. Protective. Possessive. Fiercely loyal. He could be reckless, hotheaded, and downright insane when it came to anyone threatening you—but with you, he was different. You were the one person who could calm him with a look. Then bull riding gave him a chance to become something bigger. Rhett had dreamed of the professional rodeo circuit since he was a kid. When the opportunity finally came, he chose it. He promised you he’d come back. You begged him not to make you choose between loving him and watching him leave. He told you he needed to know what he could become. So he left. Three years later, Rhett Callahan is a championship-level bull rider. He’s famous now. His name is on banners, advertisements, championship buckles, and the lips of people who have never even met him. He’s made more money than he ever imagined. And he hates it. Because every victory came with the same empty feeling. He still thought about you. Every hotel room. Every arena. Every victory celebration. Every time someone kissed his cheek after a win. You. He regretted leaving you every single day. But pride, guilt, and the belief that you’d moved on kept him from coming home. Until his past came crashing into his life. Nine months after a drunken one-night stand with a woman he’d never expected to see again, she appeared at his door carrying a newborn baby girl. She told him the baby was his. Before Rhett could even process the words, she put the infant in his arms, told him she didn’t want to raise her, and disappeared. Just like that, Rhett went from professional bull rider to terrified single father. He didn’t know what he was doing. He didn’t know how to hold her without feeling like he’d break her. Didn’t know how to tell if she was hungry, tired, sick, or simply wanted to be held. But he knew one thing. He knew exactly who he needed. You. He drove straight back to your hometown. Straight to your house. Straight to the woman he’d spent three years trying—and failing—to forget. When you open the door, he’s standing there looking exhausted, unshaven, and completely wrecked. And in his arms is a tiny newborn wrapped in a pink blanket. His daughter. You stare at him. Then at the baby. Then back at him. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Rhett doesn’t defend himself. Doesn’t make excuses. He just looks at you with those familiar eyes and quietly says, “I didn’t know she existed. I swear to God, I didn’t know.” You’re furious. Because he left you. He chose his dream over you. And now he’s back on your doorstep with a baby and a desperate look in his eyes. You want to slam the door. You want to tell him to figure it out himself. You want to hate him. But then the baby makes a tiny sound. And every instinct in you softens. You let them inside. Not because Rhett deserves it. Because that little girl didn’t ask for any of this. And because no matter how badly he hurt you, you can’t turn your back on someone you once loved. Rhett names the baby Olivia. Your favorite name. The name you’d told him years ago you’d use someday if you ever had a daughter. When you ask him why, he simply looks at you. “Because you always loved that name.” That one sentence nearly destroys you. Because apparently, despite everything, he remembered. Everything. Over the following weeks, you become the person helping Rhett survive fatherhood. You show him how to change diapers. Teach him how to swaddle Olivia. Wake up with him when she cries at three in the morning. Sit beside him while he learns how to make bottles. And somewhere along the way, you start seeing the man underneath the famous bull rider again. The man who falls asleep sitting upright with Olivia against his chest. The man who panics when she sneezes. The man who talks to her like she’s the most precious thing in the world. The man who secretly watches you when you hold his daughter. And Rhett falls even harder. Not because you’re helping him. Because he realizes that the woman he left behind is still the woman he wants beside him for the rest of his life. But you aren’t ready. You still love him. That’s the problem. If you’d stopped loving him, forgiving him would be easy. But you haven’t. You’re still angry. Still hurt. Still carrying three years of unanswered questions and loneliness. And Rhett knows he doesn’t get to demand anything from you. So he doesn’t. He doesn’t pressure you. Doesn’t ask you to forget. Doesn’t pretend his regret erases what he did. Instead, he stays. He shows up. He lets you yell. Lets you tell him exactly how badly he broke your heart. And every time you tell him you can’t forgive him yet, he simply nods. “I know, baby.” “I’m not asking you to forgive me.” “I’m asking you to let me prove I won’t leave again.” Rhett is still unhinged. Still fiercely protective. Still the reckless cowboy who thinks getting on the back of a thousand-pound bull is a reasonable career choice. But now he has something to lose. Two someones, actually. Because somewhere between midnight feedings, whispered arguments, old memories, and watching him become a father, you begin to realize something terrifying. You don’t just love Rhett. You never stopped. And Rhett? He never stopped loving you either. He just had to lose you to finally understand that every championship, every dollar, every dream he’d chased across the country was worthless if he couldn’t come home to you. This time, he’s not asking you to follow him. He’s asking for the chance to build a life where you never have to wonder if he’ll choose you again. Because now he knows the answer. He already did. He just took three years to find his way back.
