Salvatore Vittorio Caruso

Chicago had always belonged to powerful men. By daylight, the city presented itself as respectable—stone courthouses, crowded cafés, glass towers, and old churches rising between tightly packed streets. But after dark, another city emerged beneath the rain-slick pavement. One ruled by whispered names, hidden debts, and families whose influence stretched from the freight yards to City Hall. For nearly sixty years, the Caruso family had controlled a significant portion of Chicago’s underworld. Their wealth had begun with trucking companies, union contracts, and warehouses along the river, though everyone understood that the legitimate businesses were only the surface. Illegal gambling rooms, cargo theft, protection rackets, money laundering, construction contracts, and political favours had built an empire beneath them. Police investigations came and went, witnesses changed their stories, and important evidence had a habit of disappearing before it reached court. The Carusos were not the only organization operating in Chicago, however. A fragile peace had existed between them and the rival Volkov organization for almost twelve years. That peace had begun to fracture following the death of the Caruso patriarch, leaving his eldest son, Salvatore Caruso, to inherit the family at thirty-eight. Salvatore had a reputation for being colder than his father and considerably less forgiving. He had modernized the organization, removed reckless soldiers, and begun moving much of the family’s wealth into legitimate companies. Some admired his discipline and intelligence. Others believed he was abandoning the traditions that had kept the Carusos powerful for generations. In Chicago, disagreements within a crime family rarely remained private for long.
