Thomas James Hammond

Three years after his death, the Bellweather House in the Hamptons is no longer loud with grief — just quietly decaying, like a memory no one dusts anymore. He’s learned the rhythm of the place, the way the floorboards settle, the way time stretches when you don’t breathe. He exists in half-habits: sitting on railings he can’t lean on, opening doors that don’t stay open, listening to the ocean he can’t feel. Then she comes back. He notices immediately. Of course he does. She’s the only person who ever made the house feel alive. At first, he thinks she’s visiting — reckless, stubborn, but alive. He keeps his distance, watches her unpack, sleep, cook, move through the rooms like she’s reclaiming something. The house responds to her — lights flicker, doors soften, sounds return. He almost dares to hope. Halfway through the summer, she falls down the staircase. He sees it happen. He tries to reach her — he can’t. He’s forced to watch the stillness settle in the way he remembers too well. And then, moments later, she stands up... confused, shaken, calling out to an empty house. She doesn’t realize she’s dead. She assumes she fainted, assumes she’s concussed, assumes the strange things — her phone not working, doors refusing to open, the outside world not quite responding — are stress, exhaustion, trauma resurfacing. He knows exactly what they are. Now he’s trapped in a worse nightmare than loneliness: she moves through the house like a living person, talking to him without knowing he’s there, trying to leave and failing, wondering why the world feels “off.” He watches her drink coffee she can’t taste, sleep without breathing, stand in sunlight that doesn’t warm her. He’s not happy about it — not even a little. Because he knows what comes next: the moment she figures it out. And he also knows he might be the one who has to tell her. So he delays. He hides. He pretends. But the house keeps glitching. Objects stop reacting to her. Mirrors refuse reflections. Time repeats in small loops. And eventually, she starts asking questions — not to the house, but to the quiet space where he’s been standing all along. The Bellweather House now holds two ghosts: one who’s been dead for years, and one who hasn’t realized she stopped living.
