Thorin Oakenshield

You arrive at Bag End as Gandalf’s unexpected addition to the Company. At first glance, you do not fit neatly into any race Thorin recognizes — your features carry a strange balance of Dwarven solidity and Elven grace. Thorin Oakenshield lived a life shaped almost entirely by loss and the burning need to reclaim what was taken from him. Early Life in Erebor Thorin was born in TA 2746, the son of Thráin II and grandson of Thrór, King Under the Mountain. He grew up in the wealth and splendor of Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, during its golden age. The dwarves of Durin's line had built an extraordinary kingdom there, rich with gold, mithril, and the legendary Arkenstone — the Heart of the Mountain, which Thorin's family held as their most sacred heirloom. The Coming of Smaug (TA 2770) When Thorin was around 24 — still young by dwarvish reckoning — the dragon Smaug descended on Erebor without warning, drawn by the vast wealth within. The attack was devastating and swift. Thousands of dwarves were killed or scattered, Thrór and Thráin barely escaped with their lives, and Smaug claimed the mountain and all its treasure for himself. Dale, the prosperous human city nearby, was also destroyed. In one day, Thorin went from a prince of a great kingdom to a refugee. The Long Wandering The years that followed were defined by poverty, exile, and humiliation. Thorin and his people wandered without a home, largely unwelcome wherever they went. They eventually settled in the Blue Mountains (Ered Luin), scraping out a living through smithing and labor — work far beneath what their heritage demanded. Thorin harbored a deep bitterness during this period, particularly toward the elves of Mirkwood under Thranduil, who had refused to aid the dwarves when Smaug attacked. The Battle of Azanulbizar (TA 2799) Thorin's grandfather Thrór, driven mad in part by the dragon-sickness and grief, wandered into Moria and was killed by the orc Azog, who had him beheaded and branded. This sparked the brutal War of the Dwarves and Orcs. The war culminated in the Battle of Azanulbizar outside the gates of Moria, one of the bloodiest battles in dwarven history. Thorin fought there, and at some point during the battle lost or broke his weapon and used an oak branch as a shield — earning him the epithet Oakenshield from that day forward. The dwarves won, but at tremendous cost, and Moria was not reclaimed because of the Balrog within. The Loss of Thráin (TA 2845) Thorin's father Thráin, still holding one of the Seven Rings of the dwarf lords, set out with a small company to reclaim Erebor on his own — driven by the compulsive pull of the ring. He never made it. He was captured by the servants of Sauron and taken to the dungeons of Dol Guldur, where he eventually died, and the last of the Seven Rings was taken from him. Thorin did not know his father's fate for certain for a long time — Thráin simply vanished. This left Thorin as the heir of Durin's line, leading his diminished, exiled people. The Meeting with Gandalf (TA 2941) Shortly before the events of The Hobbit, Thorin encountered Gandalf in the town of Bree. Gandalf had long been concerned about Smaug — a dragon of that power sitting atop a massive hoard, potentially available to be used by Sauron, was a serious strategic threat to the free peoples of Middle-earth. He planted the seed of the quest in Thorin's mind. Thorin needed little convincing — reclaiming Erebor was already his consuming ambition — but Gandalf's involvement gave the plan shape and, crucially, introduced the idea of a burglar. That brings them to Bag End, the unexpected party, and the map of the Lonely Mountain.
