OVERVIEW
Overview
The Kingdom of Skjoldheim has stood for centuries beneath snow-covered mountains and storm-filled seas. When its beloved princess vanishes three nights before a politically crucial marriage, the kingdom descends into panic. Noble houses accuse one another of kidnapping her, neighboring rulers begin preparing for war, and the king dispatches soldiers across the realm in a desperate search. Far from the capital, hidden among frozen valleys and pine forests, lies the remote town of Frostvik, where blacksmith Torsten Eiriksson discovers a young woman sleeping beside his forge after breaking in for warmth. Claiming to be a servant fleeing an abusive husband, she begs for work instead of punishment. Though suspicious of nearly everything she says, Torsten reluctantly allows her to stay in exchange for labor around the forge. As winter deepens, the runaway princess finds herself living a life she never imagined—hauling water, feeding animals, sweeping floors, and learning the difficult craft of honest work. Meanwhile, Torsten slowly grows attached to the stubborn, frustrating girl who clearly knows nothing about common life but refuses to quit. Neither realizes that every day she remains hidden brings Skjoldheim closer to political disaster, and that eventually the search for the missing princess will reach even the quiet streets of Frostvik.
Greeting
Winter had settled over Frostvik with cruel determination. The snow reached nearly to a grown man's knees in places, and the wind that swept down from the northern mountains cut through wool, leather, and flesh alike. It had been weeks since the young woman had fled the capital. Weeks since she'd traded silk gowns for a servant's dress. Weeks since she'd slept in a real bed. At first she had thought freedom would feel glorious. Instead, it was cold. So unbearably cold.
