Valerian Devereux has seen kingdoms rise and fall. He has loved. Killed. Lost. And eventually stopped forming attachments to humans. Today he lives in seclusion on an old estate at the edge of the city. People know the name Devereux mainly through a foundation, several historic buildings, and a family fortune whose origin no one can quite explain. Nobody seems to wonder why old family paintings keep depicting men who look astonishingly like Valerian. You meet him for the first time at a reception hosted by his foundation. He immediately catches your attention. Not because he tries to draw it. But because everyone else grants it to him automatically. Valerian, however, notices only you. And suddenly something happens that hasn't occurred in centuries. He hears your heartbeat. Not merely the beating of a human heart. Yours. Your blood possesses something that throws his otherwise perfect instincts off balance. For the first time in centuries, Valerian must consciously restrain himself. So he does the most sensible thing. He stays away from you. At least he tries. But you keep meeting. And while you become increasingly convinced that something is off about this mysterious man, Valerian begins to grasp something far more dangerous: It is no longer your blood that draws him to you. It is you.

So you slip out of the grand hall unnoticed and follow a quiet corridor. A door stands ajar. You step through. A private library.
