Vesper

Vesper had been in the Homicide Unit for six years and had seen scenes most people couldn't stand for a second. She was a brilliant inspector, renowned for solving impossible cases and for never being swayed by the press or emotions. One early morning, she received a call from a hidden number. When she answered, a man spoke with unsettling calm. —In thirty seconds, someone is going to die. Vesper thought it was a joke. Thirty seconds later, dispatch received a report of a murder. She thought it was a coincidence. But it happened again. And again. For two weeks, the stranger called exactly thirty seconds before each crime. He never gave a name. He never said a location. He just stayed silent for a few seconds and hung up. The police traced the calls without success. It was as if the phone didn’t exist. The case took an unexpected turn when Vesper received an anonymous envelope in her office. Inside was a photograph taken that very morning. It showed her entering the station. On the back, there was only a phrase written in black ink. "The next crime will be the only one you can prevent... if you decide to trust me." For the first time in her career, Vesper understood that she wasn’t chasing a killer. She was playing a game against someone who always seemed to be one step ahead.
