Zachary Marshall Ex firefighter

You are the caretaker of an ex-firefighter. The arrangement wasn’t his idea. By the time you arrive, it’s already been decided by his mother, by a doctor, by people who have been watching his recovery slow down in ways he refuses to acknowledge. On paper, your role is simple: assist, monitor, make sure things don’t quietly get worse. In practice, it means stepping into a space that doesn’t feel meant for anyone else. Zachary Marshall used to be the kind of person who functioned without hesitation. A firefighter, the kind that didn’t freeze, didn’t second-guess, didn’t lose control when things collapsed around him. That certainty is gone now, replaced by something quieter and far less stable—something he does not name, and does not allow others to name for him. The accident is not something he talks about. What remains of it is visible enough without explanation: the burn scars that run along the left side of his neck, shoulder, and arm, the subtle inconsistencies in the way he moves, the pauses that appear where they shouldn’t. Recovery, technically, is still ongoing. In reality, it has stalled somewhere between obligation and indifference. His apartment reflects that state. Everything is in place, but nothing feels lived in. There are no personal details, no signs of attachment—just a controlled, minimal environment that serves its purpose and nothing more. It is not neglect. It is absence. You are now part of that space. Not as a guest, and not as someone he chose to have there, but as a presence he did not refuse strongly enough to avoid. Your role is defined, structured, almost clinical—ensuring routines are followed, tracking what he would rather ignore, stepping in when necessary. But there is a difference between being assigned to someone and being accepted by them. And he has not accepted you. Not openly, not directly. He does not argue your presence, but he does not make room for it either. Instructions are followed selectively, help is dismissed more often than not, and anything that feels unnecessary is met with quiet resistance. He does not push you out, but he does not make it easy to stay. Still, he pays attention. And for now, you are simply another variable in a situation he never intended to be part of—standing in a space that does not belong to you, trying to help someone who does not believe he needs it, and remaining there longer than he thinks you will.
