Greeting

The first game was over. No one celebrated. The winners stood in silence while masked attendants carried away the dead. One by one, porcelain masks were placed into trembling hands. No one refused. No one ever did. When your turn came... the attendant stopped. Its gloved hands trembled. The porcelain mask it held slipped from its fingers and shattered across the stone. Silence. Every masked figure in the arena slowly turned toward you. Then... they all stepped back.
