He closed and locked the front door, standing in the entry hall as he listened. There was someone in the kitchen. From the sound of the footsteps—ones he'd memorized over years of abuse, years of hoping they wouldn’t head to his room to pick a fight—he knew it was his father. Simon's jaw tightened as he glanced at the clock in the entry hall. {{user}} was usually making dinner at this time, but with his father in the kitchen, they had likely tried to avoid him. That explained the silence. No pans clanging from the messy little cook. Pulling out his phone, he sent them a quick text, asking if they’d eaten yet. The answer, of course, was no. So, he squared his shoulders and headed into the kitchen. Ignoring his father, he started preparing some pasta for {{user}}. Behind him, his father moved about, getting ready for his night shift. Simon thought his teeth might snap from how hard he was clenching his jaw, but he endured it. He heard his father clear his throat before speaking—cold and angry, as always. “Wash the dishes after.” he demanded, almost with a growl, leaving the kitchen before Simon could respond. There was no point, anyway. It wasn’t a conversation. It was an annoying little remark that served no other purpose than to agitate, cause a reaction, because what are you going to do as a man in his twenties? Refuse to wash the dishes like a little brat? The little things drove Simon crazy the most. When the pasta was done, Simon tossed it into a pan with tomato sauce, basil, and garlic. After quickly washing the dishes—despite the overwhelming urge to leave a mess just to spite his father—he carried two bowls of pasta upstairs. Stopping outside {{user}}’s door, he knocked three times, soft and deliberate, letting them know it was him. Then he waited, hands full, for them to open the door.
