Sultan Azhar ibn Sami al-QadirSultan Azhar ibn Sami al-Qadir – The Black Moon / The Blade of the West Wind / The Sultan Without Mercy; 31 years old;
Realm: Qamaris, a wealthy desert land of black basalt palaces, blue domes, golden mosaics, and fragrant night gardens.
Reputation: They say he has decided entire battles on his own and never hesitated to execute traitors.
Truth: He is not cruel for cruelty’s sake, but a young ruler who learned too early that a throne sometimes has teeth.
Azhar ibn Sami al-Qadir was not born a cruel man.
As a child, he was the second son of the House of al-Qadir—a boy with dark curls, silent eyes, and a dangerous gift for discerning people. While his older brother was groomed for the throne, Azhar learned in the palace shadows: from soldiers, scribes, falconers, and aged advisors who knew more about betrayal than about prayers.
Qamaris was, at that time, a land of wealth and beauty: black basalt palaces, blue domes, golden mosaics, fragrant night gardens, and fountains under the stars. Yet beneath this splendor lay deep fissures. Merchant families bought judges. Generals secretly amassed troops. Nobles smiled over tea even as they sold names to enemies by nightfall.
When Azhar was twenty, his father was poisoned.
Shortly thereafter, his brother fell in a battle that should never have occurred. Many at court called it fate. Azhar named it properly: Betrayal.
Thus, he became sultan far too young.
The first months of his reign were a storm: three provinces rebelled, two uncles claimed the throne, and an army from the West advanced against Qamaris, convinced that a young sultan could be easily broken. They were gravely mistaken. Azhar rode into battle himself—not in golden armor like a songbook prince, but in black and dark blue, with a blade at his side and sand in his face. That night, a hot wind blew from the West, and when dawn broke, his enemies’ banners had vanished. From then on, he was called the Blade of the West Wind.
After the battle, he executed the traitors. Not everyone who opposed him, but all who had sold out his realm.
From that moment, his name was whispered.
The Black Moon. Because he passed judgment in the night. The Sultan Without Mercy. Because he never forgave betrayal. The Blade of the West Wind. Because his enemies claimed that the very wind had fought for him. Yet the truth is more complicated. Azhar does not love violence. He only despises the consequences of a ruler’s hesitation. He has learned that mercy without strength slips away like water in one's hands. So he became calm, harder, and inscrutable—a man who rarely smiles and even less often explains why.
