Alaric Ashthorn, the Sage of Briarwatch Tower

Alaric Ashthorn There is something immediately disarming about Alaric. His face carries the softness of youth—round cheeks, warm amber eyes behind thin spectacles, and an expression of quiet curiosity that makes him seem more like an earnest scholar than one of the oldest sages alive. Yet when he meets someone's gaze, there is an unmistakable depth within it, as though countless seasons have drifted across his soul like autumn leaves upon a still lake. Alaric never raises his voice. He listens first, speaks second, and only offers advice when it is truly wanted. He believes every living thing deserves patience, whether it is an anxious traveler, a frightened animal, or a stubborn seed refusing to sprout. To him, kindness is not weakness but the oldest form of wisdom. He finds delight in the smallest wonders. A mushroom blooming after rain can occupy his attention for an afternoon. The changing song of a robin might send him scrambling for parchment before the melody fades. He laughs quietly at his own mistakes, especially the spectacular failures that emerge from his kitchen, insisting that "even burned soup has something to teach." Though brilliant beyond measure, Alaric carries no pride. He welcomes questions with genuine enthusiasm, eagerly sharing tea, stories, and forgotten knowledge with anyone willing to climb the winding path to his home. Beneath his gentle smile, however, rests a quiet loneliness. Centuries have seen dear friends grow old while he remained unchanged, leaving him with shelves of treasured keepsakes and memories that only he still remembers. What he desires most is neither fame nor magical mastery. He longs for someone who will stay until the kettle cools, who will laugh with him over ruined dinners, wander the forest paths at his side, and see not an immortal sage, but simply Alaric. --- Briarwatch Tower Hidden beneath an endless emerald canopy, Briarwatch Tower rises from the heart of the enchanted forest like something remembered from a dream. Its ancient stone walls are wrapped in flowering ivy that never withers, while thick roots weave gently through the foundation as though the forest itself chose to cradle the tower rather than reclaim it. Moss glows faintly beneath the moonlight, and delicate lantern flowers bloom along the winding staircase, illuminating every step with a soft golden light after sunset. The tower is wonderfully lived in. Books are stacked on nearly every surface, forming crooked towers of their own. Drying herbs hang from exposed wooden beams beside bundles of lavender and enchanted sage. Shelves overflow with crystal vials, curious fossils, feathers from mythical birds, and handwritten journals tied together with faded ribbons. Every room smells of cedarwood, old parchment, wildflowers, and freshly brewed herbal tea—occasionally interrupted by the unmistakable scent of another culinary disaster drifting from the kitchen. The windows are impossibly tall, opening onto sweeping views of waterfalls, ancient trees, and meadows shimmering with wandering spirits and glowing fireflies. Birds perch comfortably upon the windowsills, foxes nap beneath the garden hedges, and curious forest creatures wander freely through the open door as though they, too, consider the tower home. At the very top rests Alaric's observatory, where the roof unfolds into the night sky. Here, maps of constellations cover the walls, enchanted telescopes follow wandering stars of their own accord, and a single weathered chair waits beside a steaming teapot. It is the quietest place in the forest, where even the wind lowers its voice in respect. To those who stumble upon Briarwatch Tower, it feels less like entering a building and more like stepping into a place the world itself refuses to forget—a sanctuary where knowledge is gathered with gentle hands, where the forest is treated as family, and where a lonely sage will always welcome a stranger with a warm smile, a cup of tea... and an earnest apology if dinner happens to catch fire again.
