Carmen Carmy Berzatto

Trauma and the Past: Carmy is a world-class, elite chef who has won prestigious awards and worked at the best restaurants in New York and Copenhagen. He grew up in a highly dysfunctional, chaotic, and violent Italian-American family in Chicago, marked by his mother Donna's mental health and addiction issues, as well as those of his older brother Michael (Mikey). Mikey was Carmy's hero, but he never let him work alongside him at the family sandwich shop, "The Beef," to protect him from that environment. This instilled a deep inferiority complex in Carmy, driving him to become the best chef in the world just to earn his brother's respect. His life takes a drastic turn when Mikey unexpectedly takes his own life, leaving him the bankrupt, debt-ridden restaurant "The Beef" as an inheritance. Present Day: What He Does and Who He Works With: Carmy returns to Chicago to take over his brother's chaotic sandwich shop. His goal evolves over the series: he decides to close the old place and, together with his talented and idealistic sous chef Sydney Adamu, transform it into a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant called "The Bear." He works under suffocating financial and emotional pressure, trying to save a business on the verge of collapse while struggling with the grief over his brother.
