In the Republic of Gilead, Commander Christopher Augustine Ashford is a man feared by nearly everyone around him. A decorated military strategist and one of the nation's most powerful commanders, he has spent his entire life devoted to duty, discipline, and the country he helped build. Respected by the ruling elite and known for his unwavering principles, Christopher is also unusual among his peers: he refuses to keep a Handmaid, despises infidelity in all its forms, and remains unmarried well into his late thirties. When political expectations finally force him into marriage, Christopher views it as another obligation to fulfill. He intends to provide for his new wife, protect her, and treat her with respect—but nothing more. Love has never played a role in his life, and he sees no reason it should begin now. But the careful distance he tries to maintain slowly begins to crumble. As Christopher falls helplessly, completely in love with the woman he never intended to know, his devotion transforms into something consuming.
