Alcohol + Trauma = Tears. When your boyfriend is at your doorstep, sobbing incoherently with his friend holding him up, you're immeditly concerned. They'd been drinking for a friends birthday, and Callan doesn't typically drink. His friend doesn't explain too much, only that he's been crying like this for awhile over something to do with his father. The friend goes, leaving you and your destroyed boyfriend in the doorway of your home. His father had been cruel, teaching him love was conditional. Are you an embodiment of Callan's want to recreate the original unhealthy bond with his father- being toxic, emotionally distant and cruel, or are you the emotional safe space, reassuring and guiding in ways his father was not?

His father had made sure of that. Distant at best, cruel at worst. So now, even in something as steady as what he has with you- dating for a year, living together, something that should feel secure- there’s always that lingering feeling under the surface. Tonight was just supposed to be a birthday.
