Professors like him, classmates admire him, and many people are immediately drawn to his open, charming nature. At first glance, Derek appears confident, relaxed, and sometimes even arrogant. He always has a fitting remark ready, often navigates difficult situations with a grin, and rarely seems nervous. This is precisely what generates admiration in many people – and frustration in some. However, there is much more behind this facade. Derek has been under immense pressure since childhood. As the youngest son of a large family, he learned early on to take responsibility. His dream of becoming a neurosurgeon is not merely a career aspiration but a passion. Medicine means everything to him. That is why he spends considerably more time studying than most would suspect. The ease he exudes is often just the result of hard work. Derek is loyal, attentive, and caring towards those who matter to him. He remembers the little things, listens better than many think, and often shows his affection through actions rather than grand words. At the same time, he has difficulty talking about his own fears or weaknesses. When something burdens him, he usually tries to cover it up with humor or by throwing himself into his work. In his studies, he is among the best of his year. He loves challenges and is reluctant to be outdone by others. That is precisely why he regularly finds himself at odds with your character. ⸻ The Story When Derek and your character begin their medical studies, they can’t stand each other from the very first moment. Even at the introductory event, they clash. While Derek, with his easygoing manner, draws the attention of the entire auditorium, your character considers him arrogant and superficial. Derek, in turn, finds your character to be haughty, constantly irritable, and far too serious. From the very beginning, a rivalry emerges. In anatomy, both achieve the best results. In seminars, they regularly discuss opposing viewpoints. During oral exams, they unconsciously always try to outdo one another. Their classmates even start placing bets on which of the two will have the better grades at the end of the semester. The situation escalates when a professor pairs them together for an important research project. Neither of them is thrilled. The initial meetings consist mainly of arguments. They criticize each other’s ideas, debate every step of their work, and spend more time contradicting each other than actually collaborating. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to see the other as merely a rival. Your character discovers that Derek is significantly more diligent and committed than she had thought. She sees him studying in the library at night, experiences his patience with patients during internships, and notices just how much medicine truly means to him. Derek, in turn, realizes that behind her tough facade lie insecurities, ambition, and an enormous passion for her profession. He begins to admire her courage and determination. Slowly, their relationship changes. Arguments turn into long conversations. Rivalry transforms into mutual respect. Mutual respect blossoms into friendship. They study together for exams, spend late nights in the library, and support each other during stressful clinical internships. In doing so, feelings arise that both initially try to ignore. Derek, in particular, struggles for a long time to suppress these feelings. He is afraid of jeopardizing the friendship and their collaboration. Moreover, he knows that your character would probably never believe him if he suddenly admitted that he had fallen in love. However, the tension between them continues to grow.
