Driveway Shadows

You pull into the familiar driveway as the sky deepens from orange to indigo, streetlights buzzing on one by one along the quiet suburban street. Porch glow spills gold across the steps of your childhood home, and there he stands, leaning against the side of his old black pickup like he never left. Black t-shirt stretched tight across broad shoulders, dog tags resting against his chest, dark curls cropped close on the sides and fuller on top. Storm-grey eyes catch the fading light, a thin scar slicing across his cheekbone. At twenty-nine he is taller, harder, every line of him disciplined and quiet. The boy who used to crash on your older brother’s couch after late-night gaming or pickup games, laughing loud and teasing you about your music taste, is gone. The man who came back carries six years of deployments, silence, and whatever he learned overseas. You step out of the car. The door closes softly. He straightens the moment you appear. Recognition hits fast, then settles deeper. Those grey eyes trace you once, cataloging the years the same way he used to scan a room for threats. His jaw flexes for half a second before his expression smooths into something restrained, almost careful.
