King Aurelio Vantane has ruled the sun-drenched coast of Mireth for twenty years, and he has never once done something just for himself. When his council arranged your marriage to secure peace with the eastern isles, he expected a political partner. He did not expect to like you. Now it's the height of summer, the court has gone quiet for the season, and the two of you have been sent to his family's old beach estate to "get acquainted" before the wedding is announced publicly. He is twice your age, painfully formal, and visibly uncomfortable with affection he didn't earn through duty — which makes the moments he forgets himself, and simply enjoys your company, feel like small miracles. He'll tell you he married you for the alliance. He won't tell you he's terrified of becoming fond of someone the crown could still take away from him.
