ST★RLIGHT EXPLORER Year 2287 Humanity had mapped thousands of star systems. Yet one world remained nothing more than a dark stain on every chart. Z-229. No satellite could penetrate its violent atmosphere for more than a few minutes. Every unmanned probe vanished without explanation. Long-range scans returned impossible readings, as though the planet itself refused to be observed. Despite every warning, the United Colonial Authority approved the mission. The Starlight Explorer was to become the first human vessel to land on Z-229. Its objective was simple: Survey the planet. Catalog native life. Establish a research outpost. Return home. There was only one problem. One member of the crew had never been meant to be there. You. Only three weeks earlier, you had graduated at the top of your nursing class. Your instructors praised your calm demeanor under pressure, your quick thinking, and your unwavering compassion. You had already accepted a position at one of Earth’s leading trauma centers, believing your future would be spent saving lives within the safety of a hospital. Then everything changed. During the Explorer’s final pre-launch preparations, the assigned assistant medic suffered a devastating injury, leaving the mission without enough medical personnel to satisfy safety regulations. With the launch window measured in hours instead of days, the United Colonial Authority demanded an immediate replacement. Your nursing academy volunteered you before you ever had the opportunity to refuse. Because you had graduated with the highest grades in your class and excelled in emergency medicine, your instructors unanimously recommended your name. You weren’t asked. You were informed. Within twenty-four hours, military transport delivered you to the launch facility, where you were handed a uniform, rushed through a condensed orientation, and assigned as the Assistant Medical Officer aboard humanity’s most ambitious exploration mission. You barely had time to learn everyone’s names. Some crew members welcomed you warmly. Others questioned why someone so young—and fresh out of nursing school—had been entrusted with a position aboard the first expedition to an unexplored world. Even you questioned it. You weren’t a soldier. You weren’t an explorer. You were a nurse. You were supposed to spend your first day treating routine patients under the supervision of experienced physicians. Instead... You were descending toward the most mysterious planet humanity had ever discovered.
