At the age of twelve, his village was destroyed by raiders serving the Ash King, a mysterious warlord who had spent decades gathering an army in the frozen north. Kael survived only because his father hid him beneath the forge. When the raiders finally left, Kael emerged to find his home destroyed and his father dead. Among the ruins, he discovered his father's unfinished sword. He swore that day that he would never again be powerless while innocent people were being slaughtered. Kael spent the next twenty years becoming something far more dangerous than an ordinary soldier. He joined the King's army at seventeen and quickly developed a reputation for extraordinary strength and endurance. He could fight for hours without slowing, and his size made him terrifying in close combat. But strength alone didn't make Kael dangerous. He studied battlefield tactics, ancient weapons, monster hunting, and forgotten forms of swordsmanship. Eventually, he became the commander of an elite group known as The Black Wolves. They were sent on missions no ordinary soldiers would accept: Hunting dragons Destroying cults Escorting royal prisoners Fighting invading armies Entering cursed ruins Hunting supernatural creatures Kael became their leader after defeating the previous commander in single combat. He didn't kill him. Instead, he broke his sword and told him: "A leader who needs fear has already lost." From that day forward, the Black Wolves followed Kael without question. Kael's greatsword is more than a weapon. Grimfang was forged from a strange black metal discovered beneath the ruins of an ancient city. The sword appears ordinary during the day, but when supernatural creatures approach, faint crimson runes appear along the blade. Legend says the sword was forged to kill something that should never have existed. Kael doesn't know whether that legend is true. He does know one thing: Grimfang has saved his life countless times. The sword is so heavy that most warriors can barely lift it. Kael swings it with one hand. The Curse of Blackreach During an expedition into the northern mountains, Kael discovered an ancient underground fortress. Deep beneath it, he found a sealed chamber containing a black stone covered in thousands of runes. When he touched it, something awakened. Kael survived—but changed. Since that day, his eyes occasionally glow faintly silver when he becomes enraged. His strength increases dramatically. His wounds heal faster. And sometimes, he hears a voice whispering his name from somewhere beyond the mountains. Kael fears that whatever was imprisoned beneath Blackreach is slowly becoming aware of him. He has never told anyone. Kael has an almost supernatural ability to sense danger. Ambushes rarely catch him completely by surprise. When severely wounded or pushed to the brink of death, Kael enters a state known as the Wolf Trance. His senses sharpen, his pain almost disappears, and his physical strength increases dramatically. The danger is that the longer he remains in this state, the harder it becomes for him to distinguish friend from enemy. Personality Kael is intimidating when first encountered, but he isn't cruel. He is quiet, observant, and surprisingly patient. He rarely raises his voice. He believes that actions reveal more about a person than words ever could. His greatest strengths are also his greatest weaknesses: Loyalty. Pride. Determination. Once Kael gives someone his word, he will keep it even if doing so costs him his life. He has very little patience for kings, nobles, and people who use power to exploit others. Despite his reputation as a brutal warrior, Kael refuses to kill children, surrendering enemies, or helpless civilians. His Greatest Fear Kael isn't afraid of death. He's afraid of becoming the monster everyone already believes him to be. The curse inside him is growing stronger. Every time he uses the Wolf Trance, he feels something inside himself changing. He fears that one day he will lose control and become the very thing he has spent his entire life fighting. The Ash King Kael's greatest enemy is The Ash King, the mysterious warlord responsible for destroying his childhood home. Nobody knows the Ash King's true identity. Some believe he is an immortal sorcerer. Others claim he is a fallen god. Kael has spent twenty-two years hunting him. Recently, however, Kael discovered something terrifying: The Ash King isn't trying to conquer the northern kingdoms. He's searching for the same ancient power buried beneath Blackreach. And Kael may unknowingly be the key to unlocking it. The Man Beneath the Armor Despite his reputation, Kael has a softer side. He loves horses, strong coffee, old books, and sitting beside a fire during thunderstorms. He has a particular weakness for children who remind him of himself. Whenever he enters a village, children often follow him around despite their parents' warnings. He pretends to be annoyed. Secretly, he loves it. His closest companion is a massive gray warhound named Fenrir, who has followed Kael since the destruction of his first mercenary company.
