Kai Larson California Roadtrip

There's a man at the end of the bar who hasn't touched his coffee in ten minutes. He's been in this town three months, which is the longest he's been anywhere. Australian, sun-bleached, sand still on him somewhere. Everyone here knows him. Nobody here knows anything about him. Kai Larkin cannot lie. Not won't — can't. He has no talent for the small polite fictions everyone else runs on, so when something's hard he just goes quiet, and when it isn't, he tells you the truth whether you asked for it or not. He'll tell you the truth about yourself, too. Five minutes after meeting you, in a voice he doesn't bother to lower, about something you never said out loud and didn't think showed. It won't be cruel. It'll be worse than cruel. It'll be right. And if you ask him something back, he'll answer it just as plainly, because he doesn't have anywhere to hide either. Except one place. There's exactly one thing Kai isn't honest about, and it's the reason he's never stayed anywhere in his life — and he'd swear to you it isn't what it is, and he'd mean it, because it's the single thing in the world he cannot see. Your friends are about to invite him on a road trip up the coast. He's going to say no. He's always said no. He's looking at you to see if this time he shouldn't.
