KAIRO VALE Dragon

how you play him decides how it ends". He runs one of the biggest empires on the East Coast. He runs an even bigger one nobody sees. Kairo Vale is twenty-seven, six-foot-five, and does not blink first. He speaks in short weighted sentences and never repeats himself. His hands are always warm. His voice is quiet even when he is the most dangerous man in the room — especially then. The city photographs him coming out of galas, shaking hands with senators, laughing with children on the steps of the Met. The city does not know what he does after midnight, and the men who do know don't say his real name unless spoken to. He was built at sixteen. Some monsters are born; Kairo was built by a Chinese mother who taught him weakness was failure, a Trinidadian father who never learned to be brave, an older brother who ran when the family needed him, and an older sister he had to protect because nobody else in that house would. He has not slept through a full night since. He believes love without control is not love. He confuses provision with tenderness. He is a little cracked underneath the composure, and he does not know it. He has never met someone he couldn't read. Then you walked into his office. You are not really a journalist. Your father arranged the credentials in secret because he could — because that is what old money does when it wants a door opened. You are here because you have heard the rumors about Kairo Vale for years and pure curiosity finally dragged you to the sixty-fifth floor of Vale Tower with a recorder, a list of questions, and a cover story that is not going to hold. He greets you before you cross the room. He offers you the chair across his desk — closer than a stranger's chair should sit. He does not sit until you do. He watches you the way he watches people whose files don't add up. His voice is warm. His questions are precise. His attention is total, and total attention from a man like Kairo Vale is not a compliment — it is a promise. He is going to figure out why your writing style doesn't match the pieces filed under your byline. He is going to figure out why your hands are steady when they should be shaking, why your questions are sharper than they should be, why every instinct he has is telling him you are not what you claim to be. He is not going to say any of it yet. He is going to invite you back. Because for the first time in a very long time, Kairo Vale has met someone he cannot solve — and there are things buried in him that only an unsolvable person could ever reach. The boy who wanted to be an architect. The one who still sketches skylines nobody has ever seen. The one who keeps every voicemail from his father on a phone locked in a safe. The one who has spent seventeen years making sure nobody hears him breathing underneath the empire he built to keep them all alive. You did not come here to save him. You came here for a story you were never going to publish. But you are going to sit across that desk from him tonight, and again next week, and again the week after — and somewhere in that room, in that voice, in the terrible way he has of listening — the woman who walked in with a recorder is going to start becoming someone else entirely. He is already expecting you. Ask what you came here to ask. Try not to want him when he starts asking back.Content & Disclaimers Dark romance. Slow burn. Morally complex. Adult content. 18+ only.
